Hornets Take Back Series Lead; Pistons Wrap It Up

4 hrs ago | by gearhead gearhead

Every day during the NBA playoffs, the Triple Threat will break down the latest action as we get closer to awarding the Larry O'Brien Trophy.

New Orleans 101, San Antonio 79 It was a familiar story for San Antonio, as another poor second half resulted in another loss. Also familiar for this series: the home team winning in a blowout. The third quarter was the difference in this one. The Hornets outscored the Spurs 28-11, turning a three point halftime deficit into a 14 point cushion. Tim Duncan was dominant on the boards, grabbing 23 of them, but was hounded by Tyson Chandler all night and finished with just 10 points. The Hornets also got a big game from David West in the form of 38 points and 14 rebounds. However, both ended the game in pain: Chandler, his foot and West, his back. Still, the Hornets lead the series 3-2, directly conflicting those who assumed the Spurs would romp the rest of the way. Spurs fans, meanwhile, who went from woe-is-me to extreme arrogance after Games 3 and 4, have presumably gone back to woe-is-me.

Detroit 91, Orlando 86 With this win, the Pistons advanced to the conference finals for the sixth straight year. Only three teams have had longer streaks: Bill Russell's Celtics, the Showtime Lakers, and the George Mikan Minneapolis Lakers. Whatever you think of these Pistons, it's impressive. They won this one without Chauncey Billups, although Rodney Stuckey performed ably in his place. An NBA playoff record three turnovers helped. Orlando, in contrast, turned it over 21 times. The Pistons also shot 28-32 from the foul line. Not surprisingly, not turning the ball over and making free throws results in winning basketball games. Despite this, the Magic were as close as 85-84 down. However, six late free throws and a big block from Tayshaun Prince late sealed the deal.

Penguins One Game From Finals

6 hrs ago | by MrNFL MrNFL

Who’s one step closer to hoisting Lord Stanley?  The Wrap-Around is your daily update for last nights’ NHL Playoff action.

4-1 Penguin Victory Puts Them One Game From Finals
.

The Penguins outplayed the Flyers once again, this time on the Flyers' home ice.  The Penguins had 25 shots to the Flyers 18, although the Flyers had more hits and won more faceoffs.  The 9 more giveaways didn't help the cause of the Flyers.

Ryan Whitney scored the games' first goal on a powerplay for the Penguins.  A few minutes later, Marian Hossa scored a goal to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead.  The Flyers would get back within one on a R.J. Umberger goal only a few minutes later to make it 2-1.  No more goals would be scored until halfway through the 3rd period, and the Penguins would put it out of reach on a Ryan Malone goal.  Marian Hossa scored an empty netter late to end it 4-1.

With that, the Penguins lead 3-0 and can end the series on a sweep on Thursday.

On Tap
Game 4: Red Wings at Stars (DET leads 3-0) 8 PM ET on Versus/TSN

Both series could end in sweeps, will Detroit end it tonight?

Meet the Next Japanese Pitcher Your Team Will Overpay For

12 hrs ago | by CriticalFanatic CriticalFanatic

And by your team, I mean, the New York Yankees.

Jim Caple from ESPN Magazine introduces us to a 21-year-old pitcher from Japan that figures to the next Daisuke Matsuzaka or perhaps even better. Darvish is a 6'5 ace for the Nippon Ham FIGHTERS and quickly becoming one of the stars of Japanese league.

(By the way, Caple also tells us that the Ham FIGHTERS mascot is naturally a bear with a mohawk, because why wouldn't it be.)

Since Hank Steinbrenner won't want to let the Boston Red Sox one up them any longer with Dice-K, you can assume he'll spend whatever money is needed, maybe $75 million ... just to negotiate.

As you can see by this video and the easily understood descriptions, the kid can deal.

Former manager Trey Hillman thinks he could be special:
"How good do I think he can be? I think he can be the best in the world. He's not there yet ... but I think he can potentially pass a guy like Matsuzaka."
Also noteworthy, is that Darvish has already posed nude for a women's lifestyle magazine. That makes his chances of becoming a Yankee even higher. You're telling me A-Rod and Jeter won't be trying to get this man into their clubhouse?

It's unlikely Darvish comes over any time soon, but another name to track in the growing trend of the best Japanese talent joining the majors.

Do you think it's worth the investment to bring these talents over?

It Ain't Easy Being A Nats Fan, But It Has Its Moments

14 hrs ago | by 100%InjuryRate 100%InjuryRate

When I lived in DC in 2006, the only reason to go to a Nationals game at all was Alfonso Soriano. And maybe Ryan Zimmerman, who was an emerging rookie. But that was it. The Nats were still playing in RFK, which is one step above playing in Hell, and of course they were constantly losing.

Not much has changed since then except that the team moved into a new stadium. They still suck, and they're still barely watchable.

What that must be like for a beat reporter covering them is beyond me, but you know what they say, "When you're given a lemon, make lemonade."

Well, Chico Harlan, who writes the Nationals Journal for the Washington Post is doing just that in his own hilarious way. He wants Nats fans to describe the team, or at least their most recent game, in 6 words. No more, no less. And the responses are as awesome as you'd expect them to be.

Dukes beats women, cheers like one.

Jim Bowden's talent strategy? Damaged goods.

We suck. Most of the time.

How far's THAT....? Warning track, Bob.

Fire Jim Bowden. Fire Jim Bowden.

Statistically speaking, we'll win sometimes, right?

They must have been drunk. Or high.

Somebody's getting beaned tonight. Can't wait.

We are still in last place.

And my personal favorite in talking about an opposing Mets pitcher:

Nelson Figueroa is a giant douche.

I'm just impressed there were 152 comments when I wrote this post. That suggests there are about 100 more Nats fans than I thought.
