How crowdfunding projects can stand out from the crowd

By Joe Kukura on Apr 30, 2015

I once received an email that began with, "We are a well-funded startup with a new crowdfunding campaign ...". I thought it was the silliest thing I'd ever read. If your startup is supposedly so well-funded, why the heck would you be doing a crowdfunding campaign? The way I saw it, if a company is turning to crowdfunding then something about their business fundamentals must be wrong. Turns out I may have been the one who was wrong. Legitimately funded businesses are crowdfunding new products and projects these days, using platforms such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo and GoFundMe. Many have good reasons to turn to crowdfunding, like avoiding the gender bias of venture capital or bolstering company charitable efforts. The new frontiers of crowdfunding will be discussed at an ad:tech SF breakout
