10 Worst NBA Draft Day Trades of the Last 10 Years

10 Worst NBA Draft Day Trades of the Last 10 Years Photo"Ladies and Gentlemen, there's been a trade."

Few words out of David Stern's mouth on draft day please an entire audience of NBA fans, but a trade announcement does the trick. Now it's the subsequent words that aren't always well received.

Last week we hit up the 10 worst draft picks of the last 10 years, today it's the 10 worst draft day trades. To make the list at least two players needed to be exchanged for one another and it needed to be announced on draft day of course.

10. Any Knicks Trade - Zero have worked out.

9. 2006 - Memphis Grizzlies trade Shane Battier to the Houston Rockets for the draft rights of Rudy Gay - I still remember the resounding "Huh?" from the group I was watching the draft with. I understand the defensive prowess of Battier, but Gay would have been a perfect fit to learn under McGrady and likely far more successful in his rookie season with a competent basketball team.

8. 1998- Toronto Raptors trade the draft rights of Antawn Jamison to Golden State for the draft rights to Vince Carter - Ask a Raptors fan and they'd have likely rather had Jamison, but those of us who aren't seeking ill will upon Vinsanity can tell this was a lopsided trade. Especially if you factor in pure entertainment value.

7. 2005- Washington Wizards trade Jerry Stackhouse, Christian Laettner, and the draft rights of Devin Harris to the Dallas Mavericks for Antawn Jamison. - This is here obviously due to Dallas hosing the Wizards, but also because it involved Laettner which just makes every worse. With each year of Devin Harris growth, this has the potential to climb a few spots on said list. Jamison has been somewhat marred by injuries, so I don't mean to hammer on him here, but Stackhouse has proved to be far more useful as one of the best 6th men in the game.

10 Worst NBA Draft Day Trades of the Last 10 Years Photo6. 2006 - Portland Trail Blazers trade the rights to Randy Foye to the Minnesota Timberwolves for the rights to Brandon Roy. - I'm doing some projecting here, but even after 1 year it should be obvious. Kevin McHale was had yet again. He could have provided Kevin Garnett the top tier point guard he so desperately needs, instead he went for a guy who's going to be a quality role player.

5. 2004 - Phoenix Suns trades the 7th pick in the 2004 draft which becomes Luol Deng to the Chicago Bulls for a future first round pick (which turned out to be #21 Nate Robinson of the 2005 Draft) - After this postseason, I felt this deserved a place among the top 5. I can't help but think Luol Deng and his defense would have altered the series with the Spurs.

4. 2001 - New Jersey Nets traded Eddie Griffen to Houston Rockets for Richard Jefferson, Jason Collins, and Brandon Armstrong - Oops. Nothing more needs to be said here other than Eddie Griffen was a total disaster.

3. 2006 - Boston Celtics acquire Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and a 2nd round 2008 draft pick from the Portland Trail Blazers for Raef LaFrentz, Dan Dickau, and the 7th pick Randy Foye. - I put this trade so high just for the shear uselessness of it all, and mostly due to Sebastian Telfair being involved. Portland obviously won this deal in a landslide as they quickly traded Foye to Minnesota for ROY (above).

2. 1998 - Dallas traded Robert Traylor to Milwaukee for Dirk Nowitzki and Pat Garrity. - To say the Bucks struggle when it comes to trading would be an understatement. See: Kareem Abdul Jabaar. Dirk Nowitzki isn't quite on par with Kareem, it won't even take a Dirk title in Dallas to consider this one of the worst ever.

1. 2001 - Chicago Bulls traded Elton Brand to Los Angeles Clippers for Tyson Chandler (and Brian Skinner) - Unbelievable. But hey, at least the Bulls got Marcus Fizer to fill the void.

What was the worst draft day trade over the last 10 years? What other trades would you have included?

Houston with two of CF's top ten?

I was actually psyhced about the Eddie Griffen trade at the time.  That was a loser.

I guess the jury is still out on Battier for Gay.  Although, the Rockets insist that even if they kept the pick they would have drafted ?Thabo Salofesh? from the Bulls and not Gay.

I have a feeling we'll look back on the 76ers trading Thabo Sefalosha to the Bulls as a major blunder. Thabo is going to be one of the 5 best from the '06 draft.

How about the Suns trading the #21 pick for Marcus Banks last year when Rajon Rondo was still available?  Not like they needed any help at backup PG at all.

That was a head scratcher.  The Suns are already trying to get out of that contract.

Had I opened this up for an extra year, let us all remember Kobe Bryant for Vlade Divac in 2006.

You mean 1996. Right?

Oops. Most definitely 1996.

I did like Vlade Dade though. You have to respect a man that can smoke two packs of cigarettes a day and still appear to be somewhat in shape.

I think you're being too hard on your team, CF. Chandler may still have a very good NBA career. I'm not saying he was worth the loss of Brand, but I don't think that's as bad as Dirk for Traylor.

I agree with blipper on the Brand for Chandler trade.  IMO the Chandler for PJ Brown and J.R. Smith (who they traded almost immediately) trade was worse.  Granted that wasn't on draft day.

Two words...
Danny Ferry
Not only was he a flop talent wise, his contract devastated the Cavaliers for a decade. HE'S STILL RUINING THE FRANCHISE
