After a prolonged battle, it looks as if the San Francisco 49ers will only have to play in the dump that is Candlestick Park for two more seasons.
Santa Clara's city council voted 5-1 late Tuesday night to approve the Niners' $1 billion stadium in the city, which would open in 2014.
Santa Clara is located about 45 miles south of San Francisco, and the 49ers move to the middle of Silicon Valley has been contentious for some time now. Many San Franciscans don't want the Niners to abandon their city, and some in Santa Clara don't want a big stadium in their backyard.
Candlestick Park is 51 years old, and is arguably the NFL's worst stadium.
Construction on the new stadium is set to begin in July. The 2014 opening time is a year ahead of the original schedule.
