Today the 49ers signed a CB that was released by the Lions. That should tell you something about his talent level.
His name is Keith Smith and he was originally a 3rd round draft choice way back in 2004. So that is before Alex Smith was drafted, in case you were keeping score.
In 71 career games (he only started 5 of those games) Smith has exactly 4 INTs. Not exactly earth shattering production.
In order to make room for Smith the niners released WR Mike Spurlock.
Now, I'm no brain surgeon but it would seem this move was made to give the niners some depth now that Nate Clements is injured. I'm sure that Smith isn't in SF to be a starter, he's going to be a backup now that one of the other backups is going to have to step in for Clements.
And how did Clements get hurt? Why, returning kicks of course. It amazes me that 49ers coaches who:
1. Cut Allen Rossum
2. Tried to put in Arnaz Battle and Delaney Walker to return kicks
3. Put in a guy who makes 80 million dollars to return kicks
aren't taking more criticism for this series of bungled moves.
Problems with kick returns against Atlanta contributed to that blowout loss. Problems with kick returns against the Texans basically gave that game away when you consider the niners lost by 3. And finally problems with kick returns against Indy gave the colts a chip shot field goal and the niners lose that game by 4.
And the decision to put in Clements to return kicks is liable to cost the niners even more.
