Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, he began 60 years ago as an assistant with the Baltimore Colts, inducted into the class of 1992 Pro Football Hall of Fame, has died at 82.

Davis took over the Raiders team in 1963, that had just came off of a 1-13 year, he turned it into a 10-4 contender. Over the next 20 years, the Raiders under Davis would become one of the most successful franchises in all of professional sports, winning three Super Bowls between 1976 and 1983.

The team's website released the news Saturday morning, posting a simple tribute with his name in large silver letters above "July 4, 1929-October 8, 2011."

The Raiders said the team will issue a statement later Saturday. No cause of death was released, and it was not immediately clear when and where he died.

RIP Al Davis.
