I thought for sure this series would go the distance, with each team being able to win at home and setting up a great game 5. Got to give some serious props to the Angels though for finally being able to get over the hump against there postseason nemesis.

That was a weird 9th inning because most baseball fans can "feel" when a comeback is about to happen. I didn't see that one coming, but it's always painful when your closer walks a guy with nobody on, to start a rally for the other side.
Umm... that's exactly what happened in this series. Lackey and Weaver pitched very well, and that got the Angels a 2-0 lead. Then Buchholz pitched great, and got the Red Sox a nice lead. Papelbon, on the other hand, left some fastballs over the heart of the plate, and paid dearly for it. He was trying to nibble around the corners to some batters, and when he finally decided to attack the strike zone, he "attacked" the heart of the plate. He pitched like an amateur today.
Jonathan Papelbon is not the top closer in baseball. Mariano Rivera is still better. Today's game was proof of that, unfortunately. Great closers get it done in that situation.
Jonathan Papelbon, regarding his not being picked to close the 2008 all star game vs Mariano Rivera, "If I was managing the team, I would close. ... But I'm not managing the team. I think we both earned that right"
teeheehee... I love how his smugness comes back to bite him in the @$$, between this year's all star game and that gem he pitched tonight... suckahhhhh
Hay... some people just dont perform well under pressure.. Maybe he was having a bad day, or maybe... just maybe.. well I'll leave that for the Red Sox fans to fill in...
Thanks a whole lot, Papelbum. Have fun playing for someone else next year. You just stuck the last nail in your coffin.
Man. Pretty ungrateful if you ask me. This guy has been pretty clutch for you guys, including your 2007 World Series win. Maybe if the Red Sox put up a few runs in games one and two they are only down 2-1 or even up 2-1 instead of getting swept.
This jag wants Mariano Rivera type dollars too. Last I checked, unless he plays the Sox or D-Backs, Mo Rivera is money closing games in the postseason.

2007 was two years ago, dude. And what does he have to do with game 1 or 2? He's a pitcher, not a hitter. His "Manny" attitude has worn thin in Red Sox Nation this year & blowing a 2 run 9th inning lead in the playoffs is the icing on the cake. The Red Sox have been wanting to trade his ass away in the off-season, & it looks like he just gave them plenty of reason to. It's about what you have done for me lately, not what he did 2 years ago.

That's all fine, but my point was that you're attacking this guy who has helped you win a World Series and who has been great. I understand the frustration but your comment seemed a little over the top.
Also, I referenced games one and two because your Red Sox put up 1 run in those two games. You wouldn't be as frustrated with Papelbon if they scored more runs and one won of those games, meaning that your season didn't end with his blown save. He could have gotten a save in one of those games (1 or 2) if the team as a whole didn't suck these playoffs.
It was sweet to see the Angels kick the Red Sox playoff monkey off their back. The Angel pitchers, including their suspect bullpen, did a superior job silencing the Red Sox bats. Beating Papelbon for his first postseason playoff loss puts this Angel team in a special class. Vlade Guerrero was able to get his biggest playoff walk (Fri nite) & Division Series winning hit, in his Hall of Fame career. We thank the Yankees, for Bobby Abreu, whose led the young Angels by example, to their recent plate decipline & signing Texiera to the inflated salary ($18m), allowing Angel's Kendry Morales, to showcase his $1m talent! We hear the East Coast bias baseball press sing the Yankee praises once again, just as they praised the Red Sox :( It's time for a little Angel love. Redemption is ahead, as the underdog Angels move forward to the ALCS, just like we did in 2005 & 2002!

You know, Angels fans have no right whatsoever to rag on big spending teams. The Angels are one of the top spending teams in all of MLB themselves. They are almost as much a part of the problem as the Yankees are.

Smart x 1000
Everyone talks about the Red Sox as if they're on par with the Yankees, but this year, the Angels were only $4M behind the Sox. When you're talking about payrolls that are around $120M, that means they're virtually the same. I still advocate ragging on the Yankees, because they're in an entirely different financial stratosphere, but the Red Sox aren't even the 2nd highest spenders, despite what many people like to think.

Here are the #'s on that.
Going into the 2009 season, the Yankees payroll was $201,449,189.
Then the Mets at $149,373,987
Then the Cubs at $134,809,000
And Red Sox are next at $121,745,999.
At $113,709,00, the Angels payroll puts them at #6 on the list.
In my humble opinion, no fan of any team with a payroll over about $90 million dollars has any kind for right to complain about the few teams that spend more than they do.
I know you are probably wondering... My Giants going into the season had a payroll of $82,616,450. Good for #13 on the list of team player payroll.

Did you look at the numbers? The Yanks are paying out almost DOUBLE what the Angels are so anyone who conveniently places a cap of "anyone spending over 90 mil can't complain" is doing exactly that being convenient. NO WAY are the Angels ridiculous. They are just trying to be able to compete! Not to mention that they regularly have 30,000 plus fans at every home game. I suppose that might justify paying for some good players as well.

But his point was that you can't call the Red Sox a high-spending team, when comparing them to the Angels. Yes, the Yankees are on a completely different level from all other teams, but the Red Sox and Angels payrolls are very comparable. So to act like the Angels aren't also big spenders is just ignorant.
In all fairness, his postseason ERA was 0.00 before this game. But damn... he pissed me off in this one. Unacceptable.
I watched the game, and he was totaly off the mark. Martinez set up low and INSIDE to just about every batter on every pitch. Pap's went high and outside on every pitch missing the target everytime.
Yes, the Yankees are $52 million ahead of the next highest. That is irrelevant. The point is (that you missed) is that a fan of the #6 highest payroll was complaining about the payrolls of the #1 and #4 teams. You are completely missing the FACT that the #6 payroll is pretty darn high. I pulled the $90 million number because it was a bit higher than what 2/3 of the teams are spending. Honestly, I feel it ought to be lower but I didn't want to come across as too draconian when it comes to payrolls.
Besides, all teams are trying to compete. The Angels aren't alone in that. And a lot of teams get 30K in the stands every day. But other teams do not have the the power of the LA market giving them more TV and radio money than most other teams. Or the plethora of corporate sponsors you get in LA that many other markets lack. If it were just attendance enabling teams to spend, then why would the Red Sox and Cubs be hovering around the top of the spending list? They have the smallest capacity yards!
My friend, you need to look at the bigger picture.
Yes, the bigger picture is the Red Sox are home fishing & golfing! Papelbon's inability to get the 3rd strike on numerous Angel hitters has tarnished his previous unscored upon Playoff record. And maybe next year the Red Sox fans who visit Angel stadium will be more humble & less annoying!

It's not in the nature of Red Sox fans to be humble or less annoying. They were arrogant and annoying before they finally won their World Series and they continued to be so after.
