49ers Hot Read breaks down the good and bad.
Some of the good stuff:
* The 49ers are 3-0 in the division.
* Despite a shaky offense, they have managed to outscored teams 112-98.
* They are about to get Frank Gore back and add Michael Crabtree to the mix.
* They have the ninth-ranked rush defense despite facing Adrian Peterson, Steven Jackson and Michael Turner in successive weeks.
* They are +4 in turnover differential
* Shaun Hill ranks among the NFL’s top third-down passers (he’s 7th, with a 91.8 rating)
Some of the bad stuff
* Jimmy Raye’s vanilla offense ranks 29th in the NFL, including 30th in the passing game.
* The O-line has been overmatched to the point where Singletary is planning lineup changes
* The 49ers rank 31st in first-downs per game despite a running game that was supposed to move the chains
* No 49ers wideout ranks in the NFL’s top 50 for yardage.
* Highly drafted players such as Chilo Rachal, Kentwan Balmer still aren’t making an impact.
* It looks like another year without a top-tier pass rusher
Personally, I think this team has overachieved so far, which is probably bad news. They're really nothing more than a slightly better than mediocre team. Maybe they're sorta good once Gore and Crabtree start suiting up at the same time. But this team is still another year or two away - or a QB or two away - from really being good. I just wish we'd drafted Aaron Rodgers back in 2005. God did we ever mess that one up.
