Are the 49ers actually good?
Question of the Day: Are the 49ers actually good?
READ MORE:
We're five games into the season, and the 49ers are 3-2. They could easily be 4-1, if not for a perfect Brett Favre pass. But they also got killed by the Falcons. So the question of the day is pretty straightforward: Is this team good?

49ers Hot Read breaks down the good and bad.

Some of the good stuff:

* The 49ers are 3-0 in the division.

* Despite a shaky offense, they have managed to outscored teams 112-98.

* They are about to get Frank Gore back and add Michael Crabtree to the mix.

* They have the ninth-ranked rush defense despite facing Adrian Peterson, Steven Jackson and Michael Turner in successive weeks.

* They are +4 in turnover differential

* Shaun Hill ranks among the NFL’s top third-down passers (he’s 7th, with a 91.8 rating)

Some of the bad stuff

* Jimmy Raye’s vanilla offense ranks 29th in the NFL, including 30th in the passing game.

* The O-line has been overmatched to the point where Singletary is planning lineup changes

* The 49ers rank 31st in first-downs per game despite a running game that was supposed to move the chains

* No 49ers wideout ranks in the NFL’s top 50 for yardage.

* Highly drafted players such as Chilo Rachal, Kentwan Balmer still aren’t making an impact.

* It looks like another year without a top-tier pass rusher

Personally, I think this team has overachieved so far, which is probably bad news. They're really nothing more than a slightly better than mediocre team. Maybe they're sorta good once Gore and Crabtree start suiting up at the same time. But this team is still another year or two away - or a QB or two away - from really being good. I just wish we'd drafted Aaron Rodgers back in 2005. God did we ever mess that one up.

Im a long time niner fan and i think they are a decent team are they super bowl worthy? No but  will they be soon? yes i agree a few more years they will be able to take the super bowl and take their spot back at the top of the nfl with super bowl and really they still are even though the steelers have taken 6 the niners are still the only team with 5 or more that are undefeated in the super bowl. they will win the nfc west but loose the second game in the play offs.

As long as they can keep beating NFC West teams, I'm happy. I'm just unsettled that they didn't win that game against the Vikings. The Cardinals can't possibly be as bad all year as they have been so far. I keep worrying that game is going to cost us, just like that loss to the Cards last year.

Hey, I just speak the truth. Never, ever is it good to lose a game you should have won in the NFL. Comes back to bite you so many times.

I think the biggest issue in SF is the OL. Hill is getting sacked too much and one of these times he's gonna get hit and Smith will have to come into the game. Then's its all over.

Beating NFC West teams is great, but it does not take a great offense to get that done. They've got to get better at moving the ball and keeping their D off the field for longer stretches.

No, the 49ers are not good, sorry, I know a bad team when I see one....I'm a lifelong Lions fan...and it does not matter how a team starts..in 2007 the Lions were 6-2 and everyone thought they would be a shoe in for the playoffs...then finished 1-7.  Singletary is a hell of a coach, but the niners are not playoff bound.

So, uh, who exactly from the vaunted NFC West will be headed to the playoffs?

No doubt... if it's not the niners then who? The rest of that division is crap and SF is already 3-0 in the division.
