Barack Obama may issue a posthumous pardon to the late Jack Johnson
It's almost 100 years too late, but Jack Johnson may finally be pardoned for his 'crime' of being a black champion in a racist society

Several senators have been pushing for a posthumous pardon for Jack Johnson, former heavyweight champion, who was imprisoned for 10 months in 1920 basically for nothing more than being a black man in a country that was defined by hate. The article gives a great explanation of the entire situation, for those of you unfamiliar with the story.

For some reason, it took a black president for someone to take this seriously, despite the fact that Johnson never should have even spent a day in jail. At the very least, he should have gotten his pardon before his death in 1946. The fact that it might be happening now, almost 90 years after he served his time, is a bit disturbing, but at least it looks like it will finally happen.

Now if we could only get BO to push for the induction of Buck O'Neil into the Baseball HOF, that would be another injustice corrected.  Not that it should take such a thing, you'd think MLB could fix this on their own.

politics aside - this should have happened long before now.

They can't fix steroids nor bad umpiring, so what makes anyone think that they will right this wrong.

Well I'd like to see it happen. Even though I live in Canada my Grandpa would tell me stories about Jack Johnson when he held the title.

While I agree that he should have his record expunged, I don't believe we should start a process of trying to change the very history that has made us the great nation we are.  We live in the times we are dealt.  He lived in a different time, and those different times are the fabric of our being.

Well if Republicans have been pushing for this for years, how come during the 8 years Bush was in office it didn't get done?

The fact is that it has nothing to do with black or white, new or old, Republican and Democrat. The fact is (and was) that John Arthur Johnson was a great American man who suffered great injustice at the hands of the American justice system. Anyone who believes that Jack Johnson does not deserve a pardon needs to be evaluated. We're talking about a man who's famous line was, "For all of my wrong-doings, always remember that I was a man." This is the type of person that deserves your respect and attention and would serve as a great role-model in comparison to today's standards. Great. American. Man.

Nice work, Pat.  I hope Barack does it.  The Johnson family deserves that much.

about time , you can never ever come close to replacing what was taken from him. lets stop with the whole it took a black president thing. that whole race issue is what started all this 100 years ago. so lets thank everyone whose worked to get this done ,regardless of their color.
