Bengals to face dark times without star RB Cedric Benson
Cincinnati Bengals star running back Cedric Benson is set to face a 3-match suspension for player-conduct violations, which happened back during the lockout. Media reports have corroborated this news, however they could not reach Benson for comments on the issue.
This is the first the League is punishing a player for an issue that took place during the 4-month lockout. It is interesting to note that Aqib Talib, Kenny Britt and Brandon Marshall; all were connected to legal proceedings but they somehow managed to avoid the wrath of the NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell.
Benson, who was sentenced to jail for 20 days earlier this month for assaults on an Austin, Texas-bartender back in 2010 will appeal suspension next Tuesday.
If Benson’s appeal does not result in reduction or elimination of the suspension, Benson would miss the games against the Buffalo Bills, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Indianapolis Colts. However, Benson will be available for this weekend’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Benson has become a household name for the Bengals (7-4) this season. Benson has topped the charts for his team in all but one match this season. In the last 2 weeks, Benson has 41 catches for 180 yards (4.4 average) with a touchdown.
Rookie quarterback Andy Dalton has struck up good chemistry with Benson. Dalton has been impressive this season however it is not clear how Dalton will cope with an offensive lineup without Benson. Dalton will have to cope up with running backs Brian Leonard, who has 2 rushes for 15 yards and Bernard Scott, who has 6 rushes for 13 yards.
The Bengals grabbed a much needed win against the Cleveland Browns this week by defeating them 20-23. Dalton completed 21 of his 31 passes for 270 yards and got 1 touchdown. Meanwhile, Benson carried 21 passes for 106 yards. He also scored a touchdown. The Bengals will be travelling to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers in their next match at the Heinz Field.
With a win against the Browns, the Bengals are now once again breathing down the necks of the Baltimore Ravens and the Steelers in the AFC North. It was Bengals typical 2nd half comeback that gave them a victory.
It might be interesting to report that players Jerome Simpson and Anthony Collins have been questioned by the authorities earlier this week after another person in Simpson’s household signed in for a delivery package that contained a hefty amount of weed. Reports have confirmed that the package held a 2.5 pound bag of high-grade marijuana that had travelled all the way from California.
