Blackhawks sign marquee free agent Marian Hossa to 12-year deal
The Blackhawks, looking for a running mate for star young center Patrick Kane, grabbed Hossa away from the rival Red Wings with a 12-year deal. Curious, considering that Hossa will be 42 by the time this deal expires.

A seven-time 30-goal scorer and four-time All Star should fit nicely into what's looking like a pretty explosive offense for the Blackhawks.

This deal continues the NHL trend of locking up stars for huge, long-term contracts (including the Islanders' Rick DiPietro for 16 years), as clubs try to secure talent at what they hope will be cap-friendly numbers later on.

I don't think anyone truly believes that Hossa will be a Blackhawk for 12 years, but as you suggested, the length of the deal helps with the salary cap. The deal is front loaded, so they can buy him out later on at a discount and the average per season is such that it leaves them with cap room. It is just too bad that Tallon had to learn how to manage the cap AFTER signing the Brian Campbell deal last off-season.
