Blogging the Bases: Justin Verlander pitches a no hitter
>7 days ago
Covering all the bases while trying to look up pictures of Justin Verlander's lady friend ..."Was this the best you've seen Verlander pitch?" Thank you Reece Davis for the insightful question asked of a Detroit sports writer following the game. This might shock you, but the answer was yes. Verlander was all things filthy, nasty, you name it. He had the usual assistant on defense, even one play from Neifi Perez (Dusty misses you!), but otherwise had the best stuff we've seen on the mound this year. Did you get that Reece? On the flip side, how sad is the NL Central when the Brewers are in their worst slump of the year and no one is making up ground?
Guess who blew a save last night? Hou 5, Oak 4 That's probably not fair. You likely answered the Orioles or Cubs bullpen, but no, Brad Lidge is back and better than ever. Luckily, this blown save didn't result in a loss.
Padres bullpen beside itself TB 11, SD 4 The finest relief staff in baseball was very much not that in Tampa Bay. 8 runs in the final two inning turned a Maddux/Kazmir duel into a blowout.
Mets now 2-9 in June LAD 4, NYM 1 What do we call this, the June Swoon right? No need to totally overreact, the Mets haven't had the easiest schedule of late but the weaknesses that were identified before the season are becoming exposed. Panic time?
Feel free to add on to anything important I missed. Stud last nigh should be easy.
