Bob Gibson says that today's pitchers are soft
Bob Gibson is not impressed by today's pitchers and their inability to pitch on short rest
15
Much is being made of the Yankees' 3-man playoff pitching rotation, but Bob Gibson is not impressed at all.

"What's the big deal? I don't get it. I don't think it's going to kill somebody.
A pitcher can't pitch with three days' rest? Some of those guys make $8 million a week."

That's a bit of a stretch, but Gibson is right. Pitchers these days are a lot softer than they were in Gibson's day. But at the same time, he has to realize that he was one of the greatest, most ridiculously badass pitchers ever to walk the planet. Not everyone can be Bob Gibson.

They are whimps.  In the old days, there were 4-man rotations and no pitcher iced their arm.  Now, they always ice their arm and get 1 more day to rest before their next start.  It's rediculous.

I wish I would've been around to see Bob Gibson in his prime.  Old videos just dont see to do him justice with how much of a "badass" he was on the mound.  Rumor has it that Gibson has been known to go up and in on unsuspecting Cardinals fans at the teams fantasy camp, so you know he still has it

I was talking baseball with one of our vendors the other day (he's probably in his 60's) and he was saying the exact same thing.  He said pictures and video do absolutely no justice to show how dominant Bob Gibson and Sandy Koufax were.

Pitching itself has gotten soft since the '80's... ever since LaRussa introduced the 1 inning save in Eckersly and Torre introduced the bullpen after 7, pitchers have relied on bullpens to carry the rest of the game... but pitchers like Lincecum must not be in Gibson's complaint nor Greinke

There's no doubt about it.  They don't do it as much anymore, but if your team used to be in the middle of rain delay you would get a chance to see those old films of Gibson, Koufax and others.  I lived for those rain delays.

Pedro and Cliff Lee do not ice their arms. Gibson was a tuff pitcher in from a different era. Dont get me wrong he is my type of player. Go PHILLIES!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a long time Cardinals Fan and Bob Gibson was my Favorite player doing those GOOD OLE DAYS!!! And if you watched some of the Playoffs and World Series Games that he pitched in, you would KNOW that HE knows what he is talking about....He pitched a lot of Innings a lot of time up to the 9th inning and or Complete Games on Short Days rest... HE was a BADD!! MAN on the Mound and he did it without a Million Dollars Contract.....I think his max contract was about $250,000/yr....Look at what these wienies and whips are getting now...They are the REAL CRYBABIES!!!!

I love Gibson but this just sounds like sour grapes.... "Waaaahhhhh, if I played today I'd make 8 million a week but instead I played years ago and got jack.... wwaaaaaahhhhhh".

I do think that the pitchers have become weak nowadays, but I think the coaches and managers need some of the blame here.  Pitch counts are a horrible thing and are followed way too closely by some teams.  And that goes all the way up to general managers and ownership.  Teams are afraid of injuries and take guys out all the time when they don't need to.  That also does a number on the confidence of the pitchers.  We need to take in as much Roy Halladay and CC as we can, because they are a dying bread.  Also, what's with the quality start stat?  6 innings!!  You kidding me?
