Bobby Bowden says that Charlie Ward was better than Tim Tebow
Well, it's definitely time for Bobby Bowden to retire. The man is clearly delirious.
Bowden: “People keep asking me about Tebow. You know, is he the best ever? I don’t know if he’s better than Charlie. I don’t think he runs better than Charlie. I don’t think he throws better than Charlie. And Charlie only played two years for us.

Ummm... wow. I don't even know what to say to that. Charlie Ward was a great college QB, and Tim Tebow isn't exactly the greatest passer ever. However, he's better than Charlie Ward was. That much I can say for sure.

In other news, the Erin Andrews GQ spread kicks the crap out of the Tim Tebow pictures.

I thought he meant Charlie Chaplin. That guy was a helluva good player. And a good guy trapped in an invisible box too.

"In other news, the Erin Andrews GQ spread kicks the crap out of the Tim Tebow pictures. " - Thom Brennaman thoroughly disagrees.

Tebow is a great college player, but anyone who considers him the greatest, mostly Gator Fans, are terribly mistaken.

I don't know, Bobby may have a point - I mean, I've never seen Tebow run a 3-on-2 fast break before.

Oh, he's talking about football...........my bad !!!!!!!!!!!!

Ward was significantly better than Tebow.........at basketball.

But that said, Ward won the Heisman, played 11 years in the NBA, and was an MLB draftee. He is one of the best all-around athletes of the last 25 years, easily. Guy was also vice-president of FSU during his senior year and was Warrick Dunn's big brother after Dunn's mother had been killed in the line of duty as a policewoman. So Ward's not exactly some slouch.

He wasn't drafted because he said he would play basketball if he wasn't drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft. Teams didn't want to risk drafting him that high, especially when he was likely going to play in the NBA, but he would have been drafted at some point.

He was also asked to join the Chiefs at one point to backup Joe Montana, but didn't do it.

Tebow is great, one of the best but I'm not sure he is the best. He is better Than Charlie Ward defiantly, if he comes out this year and lights it up, wins another Heisman and a national championship then i might think of him as the best but until then even as a gator fan i would not say he is the best ever. My views differ from others when it comes to Tebow's NFL potential, i truly believe that Tebow has a shot at a good, possibly great NFL career. Tim can not be one of those players that come right out of college into the starting lineup, he will need to sit behind a good veteran QB for 3 or 4 that can teach him, he defiantly has the heart and the ability to be great.

Bobby Bo realizes that Charlie Ward gave up on football, because he was not going to be drafted as the first overall pick right? The man was good don't get me wrong but to say your that good and to leave college after only 2 years? Reality Check

Ward was a GREAT college QB.....but not as good as Tebow. Closer than some of the youngsters might think though. As I recall Ward was forced to make more late comeback wins than Tebow has.

Tebow is a great leader, and is in a great system; c ward seem to have a better arm and legs, but the noles were stacked at every position at that time;  but charlie ward won the heisman and was drafted by the NBA, so he is a better athelete, QB and football player seems Tebow has him there especially if he wins another heisman or national title this year!!!!    REGARDLESS TIME FOR BOBBY AND JOE PAP TO RETIRE!!!

Even if Bowden thought they were equal players, Charlie Ward suited up a long time ago now.  The players from his generation know the guys today are better.

Charlie Ward was one of the top 10-20 all-around athletes of the last quarter century, went 23-2 as a starter. He was one of the college's top dual-threat quarterbacks and the signature offensive star of the great Bobby Bowden era at Florida State, but he was average in the national title win over Nebraska and lost to Notre Dame in the biggest game of the 1993 season. Because he went on to play in the NBA, rather than the NFL, he doesn’t get nearly enough credit, despite bringing the Seminoles their first national championship and first Heisman Trophy. During his Seminole career Ward won over 30 awards including the 1993 Heisman Trophy. He also set 19 school and seven ACC records while starting for two years at quarterback.

Ward's senior season was one of the best ever by a college quarterback. He won literally every award he was eligible for that year. In his final season he completed nearly 70 percent of his pass attempts, threw for 27 touchdowns against only four interceptions, and racked up over 3,000 yards passing. That gave him an impressive 157.8 quarterback rating. He also ran for another 339 yards and four touchdowns.
When stacked up against the college QBs who were most like him, Pat White, Brad Smith and Bert Emanuel, he is clearly in contention.  Emanuel who also competed in track and won the state class 5A long jump title in 1989 with a jump of 25’3”, lettered three seasons (1992-94) as an outfielder on the Rice baseball team and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1992, As a senior, Bert was selected as an All-American by Football News and threw for over 1,500 yards. He was also fourth in the nation in quarterback efficiency. Brad Smith who in 2005 tallied 2,304 yards passing 1,301 yards rushing 3,605 total yards and 29 total TDs, 13,088 career total yards, 56.3% passing percentage 8,799 passing yards 56 TDs, 33 Ints are very good when you consider he was the closest thing to Maclin on those Tiger squads, last but certainly not least after being Mr. Football in Alabama during his senior high school season he rushed for 1,905 yards and 31 touchdowns at Daphne High. He also passed for 1,488 yards and 15 touchdowns. He became a class 6-A All-State first string for football, he was also a fine pitcher and outfield in baseball as well, winning two state championships in that sport. First in total offensive yards in a career in WVU history - 9,961 yards, also 1st in total touchdowns responsible for in WVU and Big East history - 104 touchdowns, the 4th player in NCAA history with 40+ rushing and 40+ passing touchdowns in a career, 2nd player in NCAA history with 4,000+ rushing yards and 5,000+ passing yards; and one of five players in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 yards and pass for 1,000 yards in a season, which he did in 2006 and 07. As a passer he’s 2nd in completion percentage in WVU history by completing 64.6% of his passes, he passed for 5,576 yards and 52 TDs.
Mobile/dual-threat QBs from Tarkenton, Staubach and Douglass to Cunningham, Vick and those in college now like Tebow must be evaluated like other QBs, decision making, accuracy, arm-strength, mechanics and leadership, Ward had exceptional decision making, very good accuracy, average arm-strength,   solid mechanics and great leadership. White has a stronger arm but is not as good as Ward in consistency of motion and accuracy. Smith was ahead of Ward in everything except decision making and accuracy, they were about even in leadership, both Ward and White had better running and receiving talent than Smith.   Bert Emanuel was undersized and lacked a strong arm but was highly intelligent, courageous and a very good decision maker. Could Ward have been an NFL QB, Browning Nagle, Cody Carlson, Billy Joe Hobart, Billy Joe Tolliver, Elvis Grbac were all NFL starters do you truly believe Ward would not have been at least as good as them?!

+1000000000000000000 for usual Browning Nagle and Cody Carlson in the same post.

Charlie Ward fell victim to an NFL Stigma black QB, short, can't take that chance. He saw it and went to the NBA. It has been the subject of Ward fans for years. Joe Hamilton fell victim to this as well. The NFL is just getting past this stigma or are they?

Both Tommie Frazier and Charlie Ward were better college quarterbacks than Tebow. Let's not forget, Charlie Ward punted better than Tebow as well.

Well, more on Joe-Joe from GaTech: He had every chance under coach Dungy to be at least the #2 QB after getting drafted in the 7th round in 2000. He hung around and was on the IR for the Bucs Super Bowl season. (Not sure if he was given a SB ring?) He ended up with the Orlando Predators and as far as I know he was ok, nothing more. He was a good QB in college fo sho.

I love Tim Tebow, i wish he would have come to the NFL this year, and that the Lions could have drafted him. I think you are correct in the fact that Tim is a tremendous leader, but teams have been playing college football for a long time, and to anoint him the greatest is just not right. Is he one of the best college QB's the last 20+ years, yes he is. I like the Gators to win the SEC again, and have another great year.

Nothing wrong with loyalty to one of your greatest players.  And Charlie is just as worthy of admiration as Tebow is for his character.   Let's see who has the longer professional athletic career.

He didn't enter the draft.  That would kinda put a damper on his ability to be drafted.  He entered the NBA draft instead..guaranteed money.
