Bobby Labonte WILL Race in Atlanta
Labonte in at TRG - David Gilliland to sit out
Lee Spencer reported this on Foxsports this morning as being  a "done deal", however, I also have SIRIUS radio and listened to Rick Benjamin and "Chocolate" Meyers who weren't so quick to jump the gun.  Now it seems it is a "done deal" as reported by ESPN

TRG will put Bobby Labonte in the 71 car in place of David Gilliland for the seven races Bobby has been displaced from Yates.  To do so is extremely smart, as Bobby has an incredible record at Atlanta, with12 top fives, 13 top 10's and led 959 laps in 33 starts .  Gilliland, on the other hand, has not done so well this year.

The latest entry list has Bobby as the driver of the 71 and Bobby will then qualify for the Champion's Provisional over Bill Elliott, should he not get enough seat time to get comfortable in the car for qualifying.  If he was a late entry, ie, after the deadline, the legal mumbo jumbo isn't clear on whether he would have qualified for that provisional.

In any case, the opportunity to drive in the TRG car will let Bobby continue his streak of consecutive starts.  This one will be his 568th start, one back of Jeff Gordon for 8th on the all time list.

I'm glad to see this, it means I can still pick him for my dark horse.  My commandment for this weekend's race has always been "Thou shalt not count out Bobby Labonte at Atlanta."  It's hard to believe he and Gordon have been around so long, the top 2 contenders for ROTY in 1993, and look at what they've both done over the years.  Of course we all know Jeff has only started one more race than Bobby because Bobby didn't try to qualify for the king's last race.

As my favorite driver, I am happy to see Bobby should be able to finish the season in a ride.

Lets just hope he keeps the streak alive because he has to qualify on speed at Atlanta, because TRG missed the deadline to nominate him for the past champions provisional...so that goes to Terry Labonte this weekend, but he'll get it for the other 6 races for TRG

I'm happy to see that HOF Racing doesn't approve of the Yates move any more than the rest of us do, and accoding to this, wants to continue into next year with him at the helm of their car.  GOOD FOR YOU Garfinkel.  Eat my shorts Doug Yates.
