Bud Selig once again has nothing to say, and his silence again impacts the health of his players.  Established major leaguers from Khalil Greene in St. Louis to Dontrelle Willis in Detroit are struggling with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD).  One of the best pitchers in baseball, Zack Grienke of the Royals also suffers from SAD.  This appears to be much more than "being shy" and Selig should create a structure to study SAD.

Once again Selig plays the mute while a growing problem in baseball surfaces and effects more and more players.  I agree that this disorder needs to be studied more closely, especially with the fact that right out of High School, most baseball players are living in buses and being removed from either their youth, or a normal life altogether.  Yet another reason why I am against cases like phenom prospect Bryce Harper, who is giving up his High School experience along with his youth because of the pressures of baseball.
Well said, Dave.  It's easy (at least for me) to lose sight of the human element when you want your team to win so badly.  A little perspective never hurts any of us.

Selig is also silent on Social Hitting Disorder, which coincidentally Khalil Greene also suffers from.

I think you bring up an important issue, Alan.  Society is still struggling what counts as a "lack of toughness" versus a sickness.  To me, this is more illness than weakness.

While I feel bad for the Khalil Greene's and Joey Votto's of the world, there really is nothing Bud Selig can do about this outside of maybe trying to institiute an age limit so kids have to go to college for a couple of years.  Khalil Greene suffers from anxiety due to the fear of failing and he puts a ton of pressure on himself to not do so.  When he does fail, he has no idea how to deal with it, he panics and he cracks under the pressure.  That doesnt come from something that Bud Selig can fix, that comes from Khalil Greene being coddled and brought along an in age where parents do everything they can to protect there children from failing.  When guys like Greene, Greinke and Joey Votto are thrust into the spotlight of the major leagues, where every game and the highlights/lowlights are broadcasted everywhere for the world to see, and then they struggle, they have no sense of what to do and they have problems.  I dont see what Bud Selig can really do to help in those situations

It's another "SAD" day for Selig and the MLB.

Hehe... Wordplay. The S.A.D. is a word and... yeah...

Ultimately the players who decide to give up their lives to ride busses and play baseball have to deal with whatever that causes in their lives. I don't see this as Selig's responsiblity to deal with, any more than it would be his responsibility to deal with guys like Josh Hamilton who nearly destroyed his career with drugs that he likely couldn't have bought without his signing bonus money.

I mean, don't any of us have any personal responsibility anymore?

Actually you are correct about the way Khalil was brought up in a way.  He was brought up in the Baha'i' faith and so was I.  Our parents tended to raise us to pray about every thing that is bothering us and it will be okay. In an ideal world, that would be nice.  As I found out very early on(he is just starting to realize), prayer doesn't make everything go away.  He has trouble dealing with failure because he has never had the real world guidance that he has needed.  Again, this is an assumption, but if it is anything like i had to deal with then I am dead on.

Bud can't do anything for these guys except maybe give them a name of a guy such as Tim Robbins(I know he is annoying but regardless I understand he actually does help people) who can help them find ways to deal with SAD.

Just my two cents.

Yeah, a commission would be nice.  You guys made great points about the union, as well as players' personal responsibility.  I just want a quick note from Bud, proving he's alive and paying attention.

I don't mean to sound unsympathetic, because I am. But, I have just as much sympathy for ALL people who may have a disorder(?) such as this. These guys make millions and have a wealthy union to back them. They can afford their own psychological treatment. Why don't we hear an outcry for the average Joes who have to live with it because they can't afford treatment?

Also, I am somewhat skeptical of these disorders. I think people have had problems such as this since the beginning of time. We have just come to a point in society that we need an excuse for anything that doesn't go the way we would like. Scott said it the best about our kids "being coddled and brought along an in age where parents do everything they can to protect there children from failing".

Like blaming alcoholism on genetics.

People might have a greater hormonal tendency towards decisions like turning to alcoholism, but alcoholism itself is not hereditary.

People will make up diseases for just about anything these days.

hell, I am fat, but I have dropped over 30 pounds since the end of April.  I am on an appetite suppressor.  It is only temporary.  I bust my ass 5 days in the gym, I have been doing that since I was 22.  My appetite was the problem.  I would yoyo with my weight.  All I needed was a bit of help.

Point is, sometimes you need something to kick start you in the right direction.  I didn't go crying to my CEO about it, I went to my doctor and asked a ton of questions.  I started a food diary and wrote down everything i ate and what time I ate.  I started it before I went on the medication and after.  Holy schnikeys!!! I tell you I must have been eating 3000 to 3500 calories a day and burning off about 1000 to 1500.  I was only breaking even.
