Calling all replacement players - Cardinals need pitching
READ MORE:

Jeff Weaver, the last attractive free-agent pitcher other than Roger Clemens, has accepted a deal with the Seattle Mariners, jumping at an offer that guarantees him a base $8.325 million salary plus a series of appearances incentives worth potentially an additional $1 million.

The Cardinals were definitely in the running but again, they refuse to throw more money then they need to in order to get who they want.  Our rotation now looks like this heading into spring training.....Chris Carpenter, Anthony Reyes, Adam Wainwright, Kip Wells and a undetermined 5th starter, which will more then likely come from a group that includes Ryan Franklin and former relievers Braden Looper and Brad Thompson.  We may in fact be in need of two starters, depending on how Jason Isringhausen comes back from hip surgery.  Guess I better start throwing the ball around, maybe I too can get a look when I head to spring training the first week of March

I was hopeful that we could get Weaver back.  Scott, is it safe to assume that Walt still has money to spend this year?

It depends on who you ask.  I've heard some people say that Walt has some money to spend, but we all know he wont go overboard to get the Ted Lilly's and Gil Meche's of the world.  I've also heard that the owner Bill Dewitt isnt opposed to using young guys to fill spots for this year, just to see what we got.  The Cardinals have some decent pitching prospects, but most of them are in Class AA Springfield and Class A Quad Cities.

Just curious if you'd be willing to take Jason Marquis now?

Its time he torments the north siders for a while.  The Cards are still better off without him.  LOL.....thanks for the offer though.

I personally feel that getting rid of Marquis, and especially when the Coobs overpaid him, will be more of a benefit to the Cards than if they would have kept him!!  I wonder how long he will last in that launching pad and tolerate the unhappy Cubs fans when they boo him for giving up (prediction here) the most HR's per 9 innings in the Majors this year.  This is of course, they allow him to remain in the rotation all season!!
Of course, saying this, he will probably become the pitcher that he has always supposed to have been, with all the promise he was supposed to have when he was with the Braves.
