The Montreal Canadiens have called a press conference for this afternoon and many news outlets are reporting that the departure of GM Bob Gainey will be announced.  Gainey, who is a legendary former Canadiens captain and one of the best defensive forwards of all time, will be replaced by assistant GM Pierre Gauthier.

Gainey's initial moves when he took over in Montreal brought the team back to respectability, though his more recent drafts, trades, and signings haven't been as successful. Notably his blind faith in goaltender Carey Price has been questioned, as well as his expensive free-agent signings this year, which will tie the teams hands financially for years to come.  In addition, this year's free agent crop meant the team parted ways with several longtime, fan favorite Habs, including longtime captain Saku Koivu.
