Cardinals offer Matt Holliday the largest contract in team history

The Cardinals are rumored to have offered Matt Holliday a contract worth $16M annually, for potentially as much as 8 years. If that's the case, it would be the largest contract in team history, by a considerable margin.

The interesting part of all of this is that Albert Pujols is only one year away from hitting free agency, and will be fielding new contract offers from the Cards. This Holliday contract is intricately related, for several reasons.

On one hand, the Cardinals have to make Holliday a great offer, because Pujols wants the to have other excellent players in the lineup, and he's aware that keeping Holliday would give the team the best chance to win... and that's what he's looking for. But on the other hand, there's no doubt whatsoever that Pujols is a far more valuable player, and when they give him an offer, it should dwarf whatever Holliday gets.

This is a pivotal time for the Cardinals, and it should be very interesting to see how it turns out.
