Chase Utley may win the World Series MVP, even if the Phillies lose

Right now, Chase Utley is the early favorite for World Series MVP. But if the Phillies lose, does he still have a chance?

Right now, the Phillies look like longshots to win the World Series, down 3 games to 2 and heading back to New York for games 6 and 7.

As Kevin Kaduk of Big League Stew points out, Utley would be the MVP if the series ended today, without a winner. And if the Phillies win, he's a lock to win it. But if the Yankees win in 7 games, and none of their players separate themselves from the pack, is there a chance that a player from the losing team could win MVP?

The last time a player from the losing team won the World Series MVP was 1960, when Yankees 2B Bobby Richardson's 12 RBI got him the award. I'm sure Chase Utley would much rather get another ring than worry about the MVP award anyway.

2	I think if Pettite wins the game tonight he will get it...but Utley has made it a good argument.

2	I believe that even should the Phillies lose it, he should get the MVP. the MVP is based on the person who performed the best and had the best individual effort given in the series. to me Utley has been th ebest hitter of both teams, and the only one that would potentially bump him would be either Cliff Lee or Mariano

1	Utley would have to win it. Tying Reggie Jackson (in 5 games when Reggie did it in 6) is good enough but add to that the fact that Philly would be done by now if it weren't for him and he's clearly been the most valuable player for either team.
