With the trade deadline later this month, Cliff Lee had emerged as the #1 player being targeted by a host of teams.  The first rumors to hit were a couple of days ago that Minnesota had inquired about Lee and offered a pretty substantial package to the Mariners.  Then came rumors that the Cincinnati Reds had offered up a pair of top ranked minor leaguers from there system.  Last night, reports surfaced that a deal with the Yankees was 99.9% completed and with the two teams scheduled to meet tonight, the deal would be announced this weekend.

However, the proposed deal between the Yankees and Mariners apparently fell thru, allowing the Rangers to swoop in and offer up a package of prospects that the M's couldnt resist.  Cliff Lee and reliever Mark Lowe are headed to Texas for Justin Smoak and 3 minor league prospects.  With Texas having one of the best farm systems in baseball, you can bet the Mariners are getting quite a haul back in return for Lee.
