According to CBS' Ken Berger, Don Nelson could step down as head coach of the Golden State Warriors as soon as next week. The Warriors have been a mess. Their record stands at 3-5 and the roster is rife with dissension. Stephen Jackson has been lobbying to get out of town since training camp. On Thursday, former future of the franchise, Monta Ellis asked Nelson why he is always blamed for everything. Stephen Curry, the current future of the franchise, played for two minutes and 35 seconds on Friday and has to be wondering what the hell happened.
Is there any hope for this beleaguered team?
Ken Berger offers one scenario:
With no realistic trade scenarios emerging for Stephen Jackson -- and with the team's other miserable star, Monta Ellis, wanting out, too -- Nelson's last option to keep the team from blowing up already is under consideration. Nelson, 69, would assume a consultant role, with top assistant Keith Smart taking over as head coach.
"It could happen by next week," the source said.
Something has to give because here in Oakland it feels like we are one Nellie insult away from another choke out of the head coach.
