Dario Franchitti ran a nearly flawless race, but finished with only fumes in his tank.  Luckily, those fumes were enough as Dario, in the Target-Ganassi car, crossed the finish line first.  He spent the last few laps in the race trying to conserve fuel, even as Dan Wheldon did everything he could to try to catch Dario.

Pole sitter, Helio Castroneves, made an uncharacteristic error in the pits, stalling his car, and was never able to recover.

The last lap of the race saw Mike Conway crash in a horrific accident and break his leg. He was airlifted to hospital, but managed to wave to the crowd.

Danica Patrick was never really a factor in the race, although she managed to hang around long enough to grab a fifth place finish.
