Indian players had a good day at the US Open Grand Slam championship on Monday with both Sania Mirza and Somdev Devvarman entering into the second round of the tournament with confident victories.
To reach the second round of US Open at Flushing Meadows, Sania Mirza defeated Olga Govortsova of Belarus 6-2,3-6,6-3, while Devvarman defeated Fredrico Gil of Portugal 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
Sania Mirza expressed happiness over the first round victory and said that it is great that Somdev is also playing well. She said the first match is the toughest test and winning it is a great boost to confidence.
For Somdev Devvarman, it is the first entry into the main draw of a Grand Slam championship after failing thrice earlier. He won three qualifying matches to enter the main draw and played confidently to defeat Gil.
Devvarman will next take on Philipp Kohlschreiber, the German 23rd seed who beat Italy's Andreas Seppi 6-0, 6-4, 6-4. After his first round victory, Somdev said that her competed well and dug in there to win the crucial match in the main draw.
