Did the KKK Suffer From Premature Evacuation?

Now for those who did not get the memo, the Rebel referred to in the nickname "Ole Miss Rebels" refers to what is still called by many, 'The War Between the States or for some old schoolers- The War of Northern Aggression.  Dixie is still often song boisterously with a the phrase: "The South will rise again" appended to the conclusion.  So it's not outside the realm of understanding why the Klan might have warm feelings towards some of the university in Oxford Mississippi's quaint traditions.

The Mississippi White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan rallied prior to the LSU-Ole Miss football game to protest Chancellor Dan Jones' decision to bar the school band from playing "From Dixie with Love," a medley that some fans finish by shouting, "The South shall rise again."

The band had played the song during Ole Miss football games since the 1980's.  In a press release announcing the rally, the Klan said Jones' decision was an "attack on our Southern heritage and culture." "Forward Rebels" is the school's official fight song, and it has been for over 5 decades, there are no changes proposed to it.

The protest consisted of apparently 12 members of The Mississippi White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan demonstrated and had expected to be on campus until 11 am; however reports indicated the event was over closer to 10:10 or 10:15 with some allegations the law enforcement  had hustled them off campus for their own safety.  250-275 counter protesters were at times said to be fairly close to the Klan members.

I have had the honor of wearing the uniform and working with the brave men and women who place themselves in harm's way to protect the rights of all Americans.  While I loathe the things the Klan believes, I swore would die, if needed, to protect their constitutional rights, it does not sit well with me if their free speech rights or rights to assemble were infringed.  When these types of situations cease to occur then truly the South will have risen.

This is a youtube video showing the "rally" (11 members is a precise count) in its entirety, along with a counter-protest that occurred simultaneously with the Klan protest.  The distance would be in the neighborhood of 50-100 yards.  The counter-protesters did not include the large crowd of 250-750 hecklers that berated and booed the Klans"men."

Seriously, an hour long rally turned into a disgraceful exit after standing for maybe ten minutes.  Once or twice they tried to say something, but their voices were drowned with boos.

These, to quote the Hangover, 'ruhtahrds' don't exist merely in the South.

Our band plays Dixie, and our title is the "Rebels," but I challenge you to watch this video and tell me that my school is filled with foaming-at-the-mouth racists.

Part of me is glad the Klan showed up.  They look pathetic, both physically and in numbers, and my school had a chance to show how far it had come.  They exercised their Constitutional rights, but, as protesters and hecklers, we happened to exercise our rights as well, just with greater emphasis, volume and in greater numbers.

Props to some LSU fans who joined us in heckling the Klansmen.  There are good people here.

Also, apparently the KKK wrote on their website (what, they aren't Luddites, too?) that they were disappointed with how they were treated by campus officials and protesters.  The comedy and irony in that statement is too thick for me to fully develop a sense of disgust that they would have the gall to complain about not being well-tolerated or welcomed.  Really?

Incidentally, this rally occurred at 10AM.  My compliments to the gentleman-heckler with the stiff drink.

The KKK might have it's origins in the south but it and white supremacy groups are not relegated to just the south. their are chapters in every state in this country. I do not condone nor do I believe in anything these idiots stand for but I am however tired of this problem being labeled as just a southern one. Racism is ugly no matter where or who it comes from.

Only in the south....

As far as I am concerned, it is karma.  Hate groups of all races are useless and fill the void left by the lack of toxic waste.

Call me what you will, but my patience and tolerance is very low when it comes to hate groups if you couldn't tell.

I hope everyone reads the entire article. Oftentimes we read the headline, look at the photo, read a comment or two, jump to a conclusion and shoot our mouths off. Only reason I said that is because I had to go back and read the words and article before reacting.

I did not say it's just a Southern issue, I have had run-ins in Illinois and Wisconsin with Matt Hale, the "Church of Christ the Creator" and "World Church of the Creator"  I even debated him on WEFT radio in 1991; however this particular group and issue is quite clearly Southern as is evidenced by the quote: "attack on our Southern heritage and culture."  I grew up in Virginia and know that the South is in many ways ahead of much of the rest the country, we had to deal with racism more directly than some.  But to pretend that many of the attempts to revive the Klan don't come from the South is to ignore the statistics that come from the Southern Poverty Law Center.

While the Silver Shirts, Aryan Nations, Sword and Arm of the Lord, The Order, Posse Comitatus, as well as various Neo-Nazi aligned organizations are largely found in the Plains States, Midwest, Rockies and North West, those that still self-identify as KKK are mostly Southern, sorry I also wish that were not the case, but it is.

It is also worth nothing that this all occurred at 10 AM.  The gentleman-heckler with the stiff drink has my respect.

I don't pretend the KKK is not from the south My problem is with people who make comments like
jswol54. Yes The Klan is predominately a group of ignorant jackasses from the south but the racism
is not and that is my point. Nor is it just a white vs black issue. Racism is an ignorant person regardless
of their color who shows haltered towards another human being because they are different. It just seems
to me thatmost  peoples definition of a racist is a white man from the south and frankly that offends me.

Dude.... just because people have the right to free speech, doesn't mean that I should have to listen to the crap that comes out of their mouths!!!  The 'Klan' has been using the same tired-ass arguments for over a century and I for one am sick and effing tired of hearing thier drivel and hearing people stick up for these dirtball-scumbags and thier rights to assembly and free speech....... people as stupid as the KKK should all be gathered up and castrated because the world would be a much better place without them in it!!!!

Not to get too deep into a semantics debate about functional definitions, however Racism is not merely bigotry or prejudice, but like: Capitalism, Catholicism, Socialism, or any other ism, Racism is a system requiring an apparatus of perpetuation or sustenance.  Hatred and ignorance alone are not enough, a true racist, as opposed to a bigot is part of something larger, hence the -ism ending.  And yes that systematic support is often found outside the South, Howard Beach, to California and all across the globe.

BigTone, I was kidding.  This topic has been discussed at length on this site the past few weeks.  Not sure what else there is to say other than the fact that there's racist people everywhere, not just the south.  I'm not naive and I realize perception isn't always the reality.

So the klan got shouted down? Great. In the battle of free speech rights, the anti klan protesters win, they were louder.
