Donte Stallworth suspended indefinitely by Roger Goodell
Goodell shows Stallworth no mercy and suspends the Browns receiver indefinitely
Roger Goodell took harsh measures against Donte Stallworth today after the Browns receiver recently pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter.

Goodell has suspended Stallworth indefinitely. One wonders if the Players Union will make an attempt to get Goodell to give Stallworth a finite penalty.

I'm actually going to say that while I feel that what Stallworth did was horrible here, the Players Union needs to step up and force Goodell to come up with a definitive penalty. Goodell has gradually become more or less a dictator who can make whatever call he wants on players and their suspensions. A real Players Union would never put up with that. Although Stallworth is the worst kind of guy to be defending, it's your job as the Union to make sure that you get a definitive answer about whether or not a player can seek employment.

Suspended for life would be finite.

In my case suspending him for the season does not go far enough.

When this happened to Vick and Pac-Man Jones, it ended up being for a full year, so that would seem to ring true here as well.  Stallworth is a first-time offender (I believe) but this is a pretty big thing to get in trouble for.  Such as what happened with Michael Vick however, Stallworth could remain on indefinite suspension until his total sentence is served, including house arrest (2 years).

P.S. - Check out excerpts from Goodell's letter to Stallworth HERE, and you will respect him a whole lot more.

He lost his license for life.  I think everyone deserves a second chance.  It was an accident.  He made a statement to make it his goal to educate people on the issue of drinking and driving.  I say give it a year and see where it takes him.  Believe me, we all deserve mercy at some point.  Let this be his starting point...

Michael Vick will be suspended to a more finite term pending his reinstatement.

What happens to stallworth in the football arena isnt where my thoughts are @ this point. I'm sure the coach did what he could do within limits. A mother/ father lost a child, a silbling lost a sister/brother. I'm sure they arent worried about helping decide what to do about a football career and rightly so. Once the courts do their part then I feel this question can have more depth.

It was an accident? Of course it was! We all know how alcohol "accidentally" fell into his mouth and how he "accidentally" swallowed it, which "accidentally" made him drunk. Him hitting the man may have been an accident, but him getting his drunk ass behind the wheel for this to have a chance to happen in the first place was no accident at all. I am glad Roger Goodell had the grapes to do to Donte Stallworth what the legal system should have done to him - PUNISH HIM!

Can anyone honestly say they didnt see this coming? I applaud Goodell for atleast trying to make up for the fact that Stallworth is basiclly getting away with murder.

I can't agree with you more.  Nor can I recall how many close calls I've had.  Totally sober, just driving down the road, for example, and someone who is parked and opens their door quickly and steps out - man oh man, that was scary!  There are others, just close calls and I'm not saying that was his situation here - but it appeared he felt horrible about it, knows the gravity of what he did, didn't try to talk his way out of it - I just feel badly for everyone involved.
For those that want him in jail for a decade, what good would that do anyone?  This is something he's going to live with forever and he seems like a man with a concious.  Out of all the guys who were bad and try to worm their way out of it, this guy seems the most human of them all - I say losing a license forever and 2 years house arrest plus 10 years probation is pretty severe.

WOW.....I was expecting a harsh punishment, but wow!  I'm not sure how I feel about an indefinite suspension.  I'm sure the fact that alcohol was involved was the determining factor for the severity of the decision.  Even so, I don't like the fact that single individual can render the fate of another with the strike of a pen--it's too much like tyranny; and Godell has a fascist, megalomaniacal mentality already.'

Wouldn't it have been EASIER for Mr stallworth to call a cab to take him home...better yet he  should have called  a tow truck and have his car TOWED home-him riding in the tow truck cab. That way one more person would be ALIVE today....and the cost of a tow would be CHEAPER than a DUI or DWI....and the DAILY reminder because of his selfish ACTIONS that one person isn't alive-this is something that NOONE would want to live with.

The suspension is only deemed "indefinite" until Goodell meets with the player and has a discussion with them.  Then the situation is reviewed, and the punishment is handed down.  Keeping a player away from team headquarters or putting their affiliation with the league or their team on hold while this is hashed out is not really dictatorship, it's giving the situation due process.  While I agree that the players' union should step up and do something for their players, Goodell and the league deserve the ability to due process.

You make some very obvious points--it's too bad Daunte didn't use his common sense.  The sad thing is, in such instances, when people reflect upon such things to others they always say, "I never thought it could happen to me".

umm HELLO... how many years in prison did Michael Vick get for killing a dog??? And how many is Stallworth getting? He should get life in PRISON.... There shouldn't even be a debate about him coming back to the NFL how about a debate about him walking the streets again

Wow.. You all make good points.. It sucks he took a human life and only got 30days.. You can get more time killing animals these days..  But if the family was cool with it, and they were according to the headlines.. I guess the only real punishment is going to come from the NFL... Lets just hope Goodell makes good..

Just so you don't appear a hypocrite: that picture of you holding a drink, I would assume it's non-alcoholic, and you're probably already at home, because I'm positive you've never driven anywhere under the influence of anything, right? Just checking...btw, I like how bold your words were typed to say PUNISH HIM.

Really? Because like Who Dat said, alcohol doesnt accidentally fall into your mouth. He wasn't sober, therefore it wasn't an accident. In my mind, that is premeditated. If you drink and drive there are no accidents.

You notice he wasn't singing that song before his publicity machine told him to.  He doesn't care about anybody as long as he gets his check.
He needs to be suspended for two years and payback that roster bonus he was partying with.  Hell you give somebody 4 mil you would think he would hire a driver for the night.

Goodell doesn't owe Stallworth a timetable.  If I were Stallworth, I'd keep my mouth shut and let time take care of itself.

I'm sticking by my idea that the fans get a vote on commissioner. At the end of the season, the fans vote if you're in or out. I'm guessing with Goodell's antics, his ass would be pretty damn sore if the fans had their say.

I appreciate he is trying to be a nice dictator and all with sitting down with Stallworth before finalizing his decision, but isn't it a little more tactful to sit down with him before sending an open letter out to the media?

Yes the drink I was holding was non-alcoholic. And I have NEVER driven under the influence of anything. I've lost 5 people close to me due to the stupidity of drunk drivers. I like to have a taste every now and then, but I do my drinking at home. The only thing I can run over is the wall on the way to my room.
