Fan IQ 2007 NBA Mock Draft: #30 Philadelphia 76ers
READ MORE:
NBA
Finishing up with the final three picks in our NBA Fan Mock Draft is CF making the last pick for Philly ...

Last 5 Picks

25. Jazz chose Arron Afflalo

26. Rockets chose Javaris Crittenton

27. Pistons chose Aaron Brooks

28. Spurs chose Jared Dudley

29. Suns chose Petteri Koponen

Considering: Nick Fazekas, Daequan Cook, Rudy Fernandez, Marc Gasol and Morris Almond

Previous selections in this FanIQ Mock Draft netted Acie Law 12th and Wilson Chandler at 22. (FYI, I highlight doubt the 76ers use all three of these picks. They'll trade two to move up to early teens.)

That 76ers still desperately need a decent PF and I really like Fazekas offensive promise in the NBA. But I'm afraid he'll pick up where Shawn Bradley left off and become the next tall white guy that gets dunked on constantly.

Channeling my inner Hubie Brown, Daequan Cook has the most tremendous upside potential of the remaining prospects. No offense to Kyle Korver who I like (and my girlfriend likes infinitely more), but he's not the future SG for the 76ers. Cook present the possibly of an explosive scorer who actually can play some D as well.

I don't know a great deal about Fernandez, definitely an intriguing option, and Morris Almond can score as well as anyone. I like the comparisons to Michael Redd.

My choice comes down to the biggest need ... and perhaps I've been swayed by Mr. Hollinger.

My Pick: Nick Fazekas, F, Nevada

Up Next: Watching the Draft! Let's get this going.

Fazekas will flop in the NBA.  Your comparison to a shorter Shawn Bradley is right on.
The thing with Fazekas is at least he can score. Bradley was worthless. I'm not entirely high on him, but he'll be a sufficient NBA player and if you have to guaranteed a guys contract here I'd like someone who's experienced.

Does Hollinger's system attempt to account for level of competition? Fazekas showed up really well in a DraftExpress numbers analysis, but they came right out and said they weren't accounting for level of competition (I think).

I think if the NBA stays slower, and doesn't speed up like it hopefully will, that Fazekas could be "sufficient".  I don't see him lasting too long in an up-tempo game.

Hollinger did account for strength of schedule. Not sure how much of a factor, but he did at least mention it.

... So obviously, I needed to adjust for this before I could go any further. The pace adjustment was done using pace factor, as you might expect; for strength of schedule, I used Jeff Sagarin's schedule strength ratings, which are archived at USAToday.com for previous seasons.

From that point, there's still one big problem -- pro success doesn't always depend on how good you were in college. Obviously it helps, and I use PER (Player Efficiency Rating) as one of the factors in my rating formula, but it doesn't come close to telling the whole story.
