Hernandez made a case for a big payday after a 2009 season that consisted of 19 wins, a 2.49 ERA, 217 strikeouts in 238 2/3 IP and a 1.135 WHIP good enough for 2nd place in the AL Cy Young race.
The amount or length of the deal are still uncertain at this point.
Edit: Hernandez will sign a five-year deal in the neighborhood of $80 million, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.
