I admittedly know very little about hockey anymore, but this would be extremely damaging to the NHL.  If they could actually keep Russian talent in Russia, the NHL would be hurting big time.

Ovechkin has to be wondering where the heck his ridiculous offer is.  This puzzles me.  Maybe he's making enough in endorsements to warrant staying.

Also to your point, there is probably a surplus of ridiculous talent over there we'll never see.  They do hold on to quite a bit, as do other European countries.  If the NHL was to lose the few it's claimed, it would be beyond damaging.
