Gary Sheffield signs with the New York Mets
Gary Sheffield signs with the Mets. His new teammates are all choked up about it.
READ MORE:
Looks like Sheff will be a Met. He's sitting at 499 HR right now, and the Mets plan on giving him significant playing time. That should mean that #500 will come very soon.

the mets must have been desperate he is gonna be a DH u can put anybody at designated hitter this doesn't surprise me one bit if he can't play outfield he is almost useless he is only helpful with the bat now. anybody could have signed him and not have put him for DH the twins could dump demen young and have sheffield play his position it is not that hard to get a good player like sheffield for futre reffrence for the Minnesota Twins.

The Mets don't have a DH, seriously. I'm guessing the Twins won't be taking the advice from such a baseball sage.

he has either a 14 or 15 million dollar contract the team who picks him up pays 400k and Tigers pay the rest!  Jackass or not I would take him for 400K

Sheff may be able to swing it a little bit, but he's nothing but a liability in the field.  Poor Carlos Beltran is gonna have to play two OF spots at the same time with him in the lineup

It's clear that with Sheffield in the lineup, the Mets will cream the compeition.

Ugh.  It was funnier in my head.

"New teammates all choked up" - No matter how many times I read it, it's hilarious!

How is a 40 year old Gary Sheffield who is injured every other day and is on the verge of retiring gonna help us?  Thanks again Omar Minaya for bringing in another crap player that won't even make it through the first week.

Lets review: Sheffield sucked as an outfielder, so he became a DH. He sucked as a DH, so the Tigers paid him $14 milllion to go away. Since the Mets are an NL team, he can't DH, so he's gonna go back to the outfield, which is the genesis of his suckage? I just don't get it.

As a Phillies Fan, I love this signing because it prevents a decent player from being on the Mets as long as Sheffield is there.  Sheffield has crashed and burned since 2006.  He missed pretty much all of 06 by only playing in 26 games, and in 07 he was .265/25/75 and in 08 he was .225/19/57, both were full seasons.  If his numbers keep decreasing at this rate, then I would hate to see what he does in 09.  I love the Mets because of their philosphy of building a team.  They sign too many overpriced free agents over the hill, and trade their best prospects for overrated players (exception would be Santanna, but their mistake there was signing him to a 7 year contract).  The best way to field a team is through your farm system, and fill in the missing peices through free agency, which is the opposite of what the Mets do.  Yeah Wright, Reyes, and Maine are home grown, but thats pretty much it.  Look at the A's, the Twins, the Marlins, the Rays.  All of these teams have proven that you can field a competetive and a playoff team through your farm system.  The problem with the teams above is that they are unable to keep their star players (who knows about the Rays yet).

Sorry for going off on a tagent, but as a Phillies fan, I love raggin on the Mets because they are the most overrated team.  How can they be the favorite to win the World Series when the defending World Series Champions brought back everyone from last years team except for Burrell, and one could make an agruement that Ibanez is an upgrade.
