Goodbye Creighton, Hello Arkansas, Uh Check That, Reverse it

by fxdirect | 4/3/076 Comment Comments »

Less than 24 hours after being introduced as the new head coach at Arkansas, everyone's favorite rumor, Dana Altman is headed back to Creighton.

Altman said the decision to take the job was initially a tough one and the decision to return was based on the needs of his family.

This is one case where the little guys (Creighton) finally catch a break with a big time coach deciding to stay put for the right reasons.

According to the ESPN article, it looks like Arkansas will have its hands full trying to find a replacement for Stan Heath since Altman is reportedly the 6th person to turn down the job.

This paragraph made me laugh...

"Altman was believed to be at least the Razorbacks' sixth target. Arkansas officials reportedly offered the job to Texas A&M's Billy Gillespie, Kansas' Bill Self, Southern California's Tim Floyd, Memphis' John Calipari and Marquette's Tom Crean, who each turned the job down."

Gillespie is a Texas guy, Kanasas is far more prestigous than Arkansas, USC is bringing in OJ Mayo, Calipari turned down Kentucky so obviously he wouldn't go to Arkansas, and Crean pretty much has a lifetime job at Marquette... I think Arkansas is going to have to lower their standards just a wee bit.

Arkansas was also believed to have offered Dean Smith, Bob Knight, John Wooden, Denny Crum, Adolph Rupp, and James Naismith.

Good frickin grief. I think Arkansas has itself a bit of an identity crisis. I'm almost certain that thought Gillispie was a shoe-in. There was no reason to drop Heath, who has a good class coming in and young talent. He deserved to coach next season with his best team yet. It's embarrasing.

She might actually make a very good coach, but I have to think that no matter what you may wish, she will probably have a disadvantage at recruiting as they are going to be many teenagers out there who just wouldn't want to play for a female coach.

I still don't see why they let Heath go in the first place.

As sad as it is, I think that Pat Summit would need to start at a lower profile job.  I don't think the first woman coach in Division 1 (technically the second, but the first full time), would be at a major program (read BCS conference).

The first woman to coach a D-1 game was at Tennessee State (I think) a few years ago when that program was a total mess.  The AD (a woman) stepped in to coach the team for one or two games.
