Harrison Barnes commits to UNC for 2010
The nation's top basketball recruit has committed to UNC. Somewhere, Coach K cries.
I don't know if you know who Harrison Barnes is. He's the most sought after high school player in the country. Many people compare him to a young Grant Hill. A player who can do it all.

Barnes is known for his intelligence, maturity, poise and overall good-guy demeanor off the court, so he seems like a lock to succeed wherever he goes. And that will be UNC.

Barnes will likely only be around for one-season, but after Kentucky wins the National Championship this season, expect UNC to be the best candidate for the 2010-2011 season.

Being compared to a young Grant Hill is about as good as it gets outside of LeBron, MJ, etc.  I'm looking forward to seeing him play.

Kentucky for the national championship? Maybe Elite 8 but National Championship?

They're loaded and have a good coach.  John Wall is the real deal and could be the National POY.  I'd be stunned if they don't at the very least make the Final Four and should be the title favorites.

Kentucky might be a good team this season but I just don't think John Calipari can make a championship team out of John Wall and the rest of his squad. It's gonnna have to take maybe a year or so to get everyone comfortable in his system. But maybe I'm wrong and I can't wait 'till the season starts. =)

it doesnt really matter how many titles he wins there, he'll get them all taken away in 5 years.

Barnes isn't the universal top recruit. For example, Rivals had him slated as the #6 overall player. Kyrie Irving and Andre Dawkins already committed to Duke, so the devils aren't crying that they didn't get Barnes. In fact, Dawkins graduated a year early so he's already on the court for Duke.

Brandon Knight and Joshua Hairston are still out there and many feel that at least one, if not both, will commit to Duke now that Irving has, since they are reported to want to play together.

So Barnes is a great add for UNC, no doubt about it. But he's not the "most sought after player" in the country and Duke isn't worried too much about not getting him, given the guys that Duke has already got.

I live in Ames, and have seen Harrison play.  Let me just say as good as Harrison is on the court he is an even better person off of the court.  He carries a fine GPA and is articulate and intelligent.  Does volunteer work, leads bible study, plays the saxaphone.

He is a damn fine basketball player as well.  UNC is going to have a great kid playing for them, and frankly I would be surprised if he left after one year.

Every time I think about being happy for North Carolina, I'm reminded that Dick Vitale will use this, and his platform to softly persuade other kids to go to Carolina.  So I'm not so thrilled about this.

Getting the top overall recruit is great...one might say things couldn't get much better.  Oh wait, he picked us over Duke...it can get better, so much better!!

You used "Dick Vitale" and "softly" in the same sentence.  The universe is about to explode now.

He's *not* the overall top recruit. Brandon Knight (G) from Ft. Lauderdale, FL is. And Knight hasn't selected a school yet, but Duke is in the mix of his choices and UNC (reportedly) isn't.

I didn't think about that.  Very true.  Good stuff, Blazer.

Let's not forget that Duke will STILL have an explosive offense next season. Remember Seth Curry? Best freshman last year? He's going to play for Duke next season? Think about it.
