Hedo Turkoglu agrees to contract in principle with the Portland Trail Blazers
Hedo Turkoglu is joining the Trail Blazers. Man, this team is going to be even more fun to watch this next season.
Not many people expected Hedo Turkoglu to be back next season with the Magic after he opted out of his contract and the Magic traded for Vince Carter. Now, that's truly the case.

Turkoglu has reached an agreement in principle to become a Portland Trail Blazer, according to sources.

Although a verbal commitment may be announced sooner, the terms of the contract cannot be finalized until Wednesday, after the NBA informs teams what next year's salary cap will be.

Gotta say, the Blazers were a lot of fun to watch this last season, and the addition of Turkoglu makes this team even better. I wouldn't be surprised to see them get past the first round of the playoffs this next year.

It will be interesting to see who get ball-handling duties in the fourth quarter.  Personally, I think this would be completely unnecessary if the Blazers just kept Brandon Rush instead of trading him for Jarryd Bayless.

Portland was one of the best offensive teams in the NBA. They have great offensive players in Roy and Aldridge and complimentary all-offense guys in Outlaw, Blake, Fernandez, Rodriguez, and Batum. Bayless and Frye are two other guys, if they get the PT, that could also provide 6-7 points per game. And no team, NONE, was better in the fourth quarter than Portland (+2.5).

So now they add a defensively-challenged small forward whose best asset is playing in the fourth quarter. I know someone can explain this to me.

I hate when people talk about the Blazers that don't actually watch them play....... Rodriguez was just a time filler at PG so Blake could rest, he's as inept offensively as he is on D; and Batum is a solid perimeter defensive player with almost no offensive skills other than a streaky 3-point shot (although there's a ton of upside with him being 19 years old).

This move works for Portland because they will have someone that can create offensively other than Brandon Roy.  It gives them a facilitator that can create shots for himself and for the other 4 guys on the floor.  Portland can also afford his lack of D because their strength defensively is in the middle with guys like Pryzbilla, Oden, and Aldridge.

That may be the case that Rush ends up being a better player than Turkoglu, but the last thing the Blazers needed is another big piece of their team being so young.  The move is great because Turkoglu is an established vet that can start now and lead the team now while Rush would have to learn on the job and be a couple of years away from being a major contributor on a consistantly high level.........

and besides, the weakest position on Portland's roster is (and was during last years draft) at PG while they have more talent than they can put on the floor at SF.

Rush would've kept the youth movement going, but why not?  The Blazers are still a couple years away from being contenders anyway.  Oden is going to take a few years until he can be a good contributor, Roy isn't in his prime yet, and Aldridge is still developing too.  By the time those guys were ready, Rush would've been too.  Plus, Rush can play defense.

Also, I do believe your last paragraph is valid.  However, if thats what they wanted to address that they should've done a sign and trade for Andre Miller.

Turkoglu is going to improve the Blazers, but they've made mistakes in the past and now the Blazers are trying to rectify them.  If they did it right the 1st time around they'd be better off in the long term.

I have a sinking feeling that in about 2 years, the Blazers will regret his contract.

Wow this could be a go comparison of the Old Trailblazer's without Clyde Drexler but as for shooters. The Blazers are back in Playoff form.

After just shedding the "Jail Blazer" image, there's no way that Portland would touch a player with any baggage whether it be legal trouble (like Zach Randolf) or rumors that the guy is a bad team-mate in the locker room..... hence them not getting Andre Miller.  And there's no guarantee that Rush will be as good as he's hyped up to be, so there was really no reason to draft him when they already have Martell Webster, Travis Outlaw, Nick Batum and two other guys playing in Europe that all have as much potential as Rush.

Turkoglu will improve the Blazers because he'll be the best "PG" on their team (meaning that they can run the offense through him).  He's a guy that can create his own shot and facilitate the rest of the team which is what Portland has needed, and Rush can't do that.

well, it's just come out that Hedo has rejected the deal with Portland and negotiations have been broken off. He's leaving Portland tomorrow and it's not looking like he's going to be back...

I wonder what Kevin Pritchard has up his sleeve now...
