IRL and NASCAR Should Team Up, Not Fight
IRL Could do better to work WITH NASCAR, not against them
This is one of the best articles I've read in a long time.

Pete Pistone, of CBS has come out both barrels blasting with a plan for IRL to move back into the ranks of the top sports in America, and he has some ideas that might have IRL fans and NASCAR fans up in arms.

But me? Well, I'm a racing fan, and if I could get to see a NASCAR race and an Indy race in the same weekend, I'd be on it like white on rice.

What do you think? Does he have some good ideas? Could it work? Or better yet, would NASCAR or IRL allow it to work?

You tell me.

I have a feeling you're all expecting me to flip out, but not going to.

1.) More ovals- 100% agree. Duh is all that really needs to be said

2.) moving the 500 starting time up- This will probably happen in 2010 or 2011. It could get Robby Gordon and Sam Hornish, Jr. and the like to come back, which certainly wouldn't hurt. Would it get Kyle Busch or Junior? No. They don't have the time to learn the cars before the race, and they know it. Plus, Toyota would never let Busch drive a Honda.

3.) Team up with NASCAR- My head said it couldn't hurt to bring the product straight to the people that IndyCar needs to attract. The emotional said of me doesn't trust NASCAR. Not now, not ever. Plus, Pistone may say get over looking inferior, but it does look like supplication, and it's not good. Also, what's NASCAR's motivation to give exposure to a rival, espeically one as weak in the marketplace as IndyCar is? It doesn't make sense, and that's why they almost certainly wouldn't do it.

Overall though, IndyCar brass needs to grow a pair and be more aggressive. All the good moves they make are defensive "have to do it" sorts of things. That's not going to grow the series, and status quo is obviously not working. However, that's about the best IndyCar can do, and it is incredibly, incredibly frustrating. It's time for action, and the leadership doesn't appear very proactive.

One thing I will say..racing is racing. I watched, as I promised, last weekend. I will admit I was not solely tuned in, but I watched a great deal. I have come to the conclusion that part of the reason I don't watch more is the drivers are not familiar faces, (although the faces are definitely something to look at, sorry, I'm a woman, it goes with the territory). If IRL was more mainstream,(which Nascar could help with), and the public saw more of the drivers, they would become more involved, at least I know I would. Right now, I am only rooting for the faces and names I know.
I also must admit, I dont know a lot about the car itself, what's under the hood, and, many other differences.
So that much, is on me,but Eric, my interest has definitely been peeked..that was a helluva race last weekend.
and, as I said earlier, racing, is racing!

as i have said on other threads last Saturdays race was one of if not the most exciting races that i have ever seen. The skill and daring of these drivers need to be seen....I think that the irl's first move should be to get on a major tv outlet and off Versus....the presentation was well done but the series needs to have the buzz that a major network could provide.......

I agree TJ, the race was AWESOME.  And if IRL and NASCAR would work together, those faces that AndiLee doesn't recognize would become a household name, and the ladies would be panting all over them, just like the guys do over Danica!!

okay, okay,  let's not get carried away, but I could definitely do with more racing in my life!!!

I think that it's a good idea and should have happened long time ago.
It will increase exposure to Motor Sports in mainstream media in general and to Nascar and indy in particular.
In addition, I don't think that NASCAR managers really have a choise- the TV ratings for this season speak for themselves.

In case anyone is wondering is my distrust of NASCAR is just speculation and hate, it isn't. Note that most of the ovals Pistone says IndyCar has raced on and left are owned by International Speedway Corporation, aka the track owning arm of NASCAR. ISC is notorious for treating what IndyCar races they have like complete afterthoughts. They make little or no effort at promotion, and they stick the IndyCar tickets as part of the season ticket package for NASCAR. They're perfectly happy to see 30-50k actually show up to Indy races, which of course given how many seats these tracks have, is going to look awful. There isn't a good faith effort here, so why would they give any more effort for seemingly little benefit?

So, while Pistone tries to turn this into an "IndyCar needs to cooperate with NASCAR" thing, it takes two to deal, and current actions show that NASCAR has no interest in that.

Well dang Eric you found something we agree on. I hate ISC tracks. They treat the fans like crap, they are dirtier, and harder to get around, get information, and very poorly organized, while being noticeably more expensive!
Does not surprise  me they don't go out of their way for anything, especially if there isn't something in it for them. I don't think this is what Bill France Sr had in mind when he began his dynasty!
