JaMarcus Russell goes AWOL from final day of Raiders OTAs after telling teammates to finish camp strong
JaMarcus Russell steps up and calls on his teammates to finish up OTAs strong. Proceeds to then go AWOL from Friday's practice. Brilliant.
Man is this story ever hilarious. JaMarcus Russell has recently been stepping up for the Raiders, having his own practices with receivers, and trying to take more of a leadership role. Well, he recently did that, by telling teammates that they had to finish up OTAs strong, just like a team leader would.

Only problem was that on the last day of OTAs - which was Friday - Russell went AWOL from practice.

Are you kidding me? Unless his grandma died, this is possibly the worst thing you could do if you're trying to prove to people you've turned the corner.

Don't wanna get started on this guy again, but he keeps giving us all reasons to do so.  For one though, the article is written by Mike Lombardi, who has his problems and opinions about the Raider organization himself, does bring up the oft-reported issue that has been a knock on Russell throughout his collegiate and young pro career.  He needs to realize that a QB, especially a #1 overall draft choice (that was definitely a mistake IMHO) is the face of the franchise and needs to be the leader of the team.  Russell has yet to show that as well as his dedication to the team and to his own growth and development.  This is the year for him that will determine whether or not he is a bust or if he has grown.  The second half of last season was a start, but he's got a long way to go.

You wonder who's capable of mentoring this guy in Oakland.

Enter Jeff Garcia.  But you have to wonder if a guy that competitive can put that aside to help his competition become a better overall player.  Russell just needs some continuity in the coaching staff, which is hard to come by in Oakland these days, but Cable being there for his second full year should help things out a bit.

Good call.  Do you think Garcia will end up taking the job?

Damn I can only hope.  I think Russell would have to have a monumental faceplant or injury for that to happen though.  Al Davis loves his investments a little too much, but he also does want to win now, so that will be an interesting subplot all season long.  I just hope they aren't planning on using the same offense for either guy, since both are completely different types of QB's.
