Great trade for Toronto!!!  They'll miss Ford a little but Calderon and Eric Parker have been playing really well.  And lets face it, Bargniani is not an NBA center.

The Raptors have been softer than Charmin toilet paper the past coulpe seasons and adding O'Neal should make them a force in the East.

+1 thumbs upJermaine O'Neal isn't a Center either, but it's clear Colangelo is trying to build a Suns-type offense.  Toronto is obviously looking PG in the Draft though.

+1 thumbs upHe may not be a traditional center but if guys like Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol and Amare Stoudamire are considered centers then O'Neal should be considered one too.

+1 thumbs upHoward is a legitimate Center.  He bangs and gets 20 boards and 5 blocks regularly.  Gasol and Stoudemire are only Centers as far as the spot they occupy on the floor, and O'Neal belongs in that category with them.  Softies who can't play a lick of defense and are usually wandering out on the perimeter.

Considering Bosh is the same type of player, I wonder which will cave and get dirty down low - you know neither want to.

+2 thumbs upThis will be interesting.  Obvious Colangelo is trying to build the Suns East, but the two teams we've seen with the most success as a running European team (Lakers, Suns) have had dominant guards.  Caledron is really good, but I don't think he'll ever qualify as dominating.  Bosh and O'Neal will be able to really spread open the floor, so as long as they can put a shooter on the perimeter (Kapono), the lane should be wide open for penetrating guards.  Defense, on the other hand, will probably be awful.

I dissagree with O'Neal being a perimeter player, most of his points come off of his little jump hook from about 5'-8' from the basket.  The dude pretty much lives in the paint, and he's a far better defender than most people seem to give him credit for.  I've always thought of him as a kind of "poor man's" Kevin Garnett w/o the range (O'Neal can't shoot from outside very well).

+1 thumbs up

With this trade, the Raptors have to be considered among the Eastern Conference's top contenders this season..that is, IF Jermaine O'Neal can stay healthy. That's been a problem for him over the past couple of years, but with the added motivation of playing alongside Chris Bosh, O'Neal could be pushed to new heights of achievement.

Most importantly, what Eastern Conference team could match up with Bosh and O'Neal down low? Orlando has Dwight Howard, Chicago has a washed-up Ben Wallace, Detroit has 'Sheed. Boston's Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins, along with a deep frontcourt, might pose the toughest challenge, but nobody boasts the one-two punch up front that Toronto now possesses. The fact that the Raptors dealt TJ Ford as part of the trade cements Jose Calderon's spot as the starting point guard, and as a largely pass-first and turnover-averse guard, he should have a field day dishing to Bosh and O'Neal.

As for the Pacers, they've appear to have put themselves in good position for the future. O'Neal was no longer happy in Indianapolis, and his window to lead the team deep into the playoffs disappeared during the Pacers-Pistons brawl years ago. Since the Pacers picked up Ford, they'll likely try to deal Jamaal Tinsley, something they've been dying to do for a long time now. Between Ford, their two mid-first rounders, and whoever they can get for Tinsley, plus the cap space they freed up by dealing O'Neal, the Pacers have positioned themselves well moving forward.

In the end, though, this trade has to be considered a coup for the Raptors. Yes, they dealt their first round pick, but they also let Calderon take over full-time and added a dominant center/power forward that can team with the still-improving Chris Bosh. Toronto should be considered serious threats to win the Eastern Conference this year, hands down.

+1 thumbs upIt's a good trade for Toronto. They needed size and a legitimate threat up front. Hopefully Jose continues to mature as a player so there isn't a gap at the point. I think at one point he went 3 or 4 games without a turnover while playing heavy minutes.  Add a back up veteran guard who you can rely on when he is struggling and I think Toronto may actually get past the first round this year.  To get beyond that  I still think they need a banger.
