While the Browns have made it clear that Derek Anderson will be starting against the Bengals this Sunday, there's another Brown who's not exactly along for the ride. And it's about the only Brown in history that you can't ignore. I'm of course referring to the greatest running back ever, Mr. Jim Brown.Yes, the man who remains about the only thing that was ever worth watching in Cleveland (aside from LeBron), believes that the Browns should go with Brady Quinn.
On an appearance Monday night on "Pro Football Central," an Internet radio show, Brown - who is an executive adviser for the Browns - told the interviewer that he had been in organization meetings all day and that, "we all seem to be in one accord. But it's up to the coach to make the final decision on his lineup this week. But if he makes the right decision on his lineup this week, I think we can be out of this terrible kind of depression we're in."
Whoops. So I guess Romeo Crennel didn't agree.
And Brown went on to make it even more clear who he's backing.
One has played a lot more than the other has, successfully, and also had some failure. If we try Brady this week, it's a change of pace. Why not have a change of pace that might bring you a spark? And if he doesn't cut it, we can bring the other guy back, and we can bring Brady back.
"We haven't decided we have a major superstar and if he sits down a quarter we will have broken his heart. This is professional football. These guys are getting paid and sometimes you need a spark, and a different personality can do it."
I wouldn't exactly say that's the greatest endorsement of Quinn, but it's at least AN endorsement.
Of course, the larger question is that meeting that Brown had with other Browns employees. Is it really that bad after 3 weeks that the majority of people in the Browns organization are ready to turn the keys over to Brady Quinn? It certainly seems like it.
I think the worst thing here is if you're Anderson. Unless you suddenly start lighting it up literally every week, it seems set in stone that Quinn will get a shot very soon.
I guess, in reality, that makes sense, especially since Quinn was a first round draft choice, and you want to see what you get with him. And, let's be honest, if Anderson can't beat the Bengals then admittedly you might as well throw Quinn out there.
So, it looks like Derek Anderson is playing for his job this weekend. But then again, at this point, he's got to feel that way every weekend.
