Joe Torre compared George Steinbrenner to his abusive father
Joe Torre compared George Steinbrenner to his abusive father. Ummm... isn't that a bit much, Joe?

No one will ever confuse me with a George Steinbrenner fan. Honestly, I think the man is a cancer to Major League Baseball, and his lasting legacy will be as the man who crippled the game and economically brought it to its knees, thanks to his free-spending, economically insane ways. And from everything I've ever heard, he's also not the most pleasant man in the world

However, I think Joe Torre took it a bit too far, when he and his wife compared Steinbrenner to Torre's father, who threw his wife down the stairs when she was pregnant with the baby who would grow up to be the beloved World Series-winning manager with the Yankees.

I'm not saying Steinbrenner is (or has EVER been) a good guy. But seriously, Joe?

I think every time Torre discusses his history in New York, and takes a shot at people, he tarnishes the "Torre brand."  He used to be know as a guy who would take the high-road, but that is not longer true.  This only hurts Joe Torre.  Everyone already knows Steinbrenner is a dope.

Can you ever write a freaking article without putting your idiotic opinions in it? I find it really rich that a Red Sox fan is talking about free-spending when the last 2 World Series that they have won are predicated on just that.  George Steinbrenner did not bring baseball to its knees financially.  The greedy owners, agents and players did that all on their own.  Plus, if you have such a problem with high paid athletes then you should probably not be watching professional sports at all because even the lowest paid athletes make more money than the average person ever will.  So here's my advice:  Get over it and just enjoy the game for what it is.

With all that being said, Joe Torre needs to shut up already.  He totally played himself writing that book.  I do not for the life of me understand why he stayed in New York that long if it was so horrible.  If he was being treated like crap then I am sure his players would have understood why he left.  There are clearly some  underlying issues going on here that are not be  talked about.  No one could ever mistake them for best friends but they appeared to get along.  Steinbrenner  did give Joe a chance when no one else would and he did stick up for Joe in the media many times when he was under fire for making questionable managerial moves (e.g. bullpen usage).  I was a big Joe Torre fan when he managed here but I honestly was not that sorry to see him go after his last few seasons.  He did not look interested in the least in managing the team and it showed on the field.  Move on with your life already, Joe, because your former team already has.

To answer your question... no, I can not write an article without putting my idiotic opinions in it. Nor am I even remotely interested in doing so.

As for the Red Sox, feel free to name a year in which they had the highest payroll in the league. Or even close to it, for that matter. In 2004, they were $57M behind the Yankees. In 2007, they were $46M behind the Yanks. So... you were saying?

The financial downfall of baseball WILL be at least in part due to the Yankees driving up the market and rendering several teams completely unable to compete. You may not see it now, but that is the truth.

Take your homer goggles off and see the truth.

My buddy always equates Steinbrenner to a combination of  Hitler and Yoko Ono.  I can't argue with that assessment (and he's a huge Yankees fan...)

Joe, Joe, Joe. Your legacy as a great ballplayer and one of the greatest managers of all-time is firmly in stone. Please don't in any way tarnish it with spiteful comments like these. Steinbrenner has been one of the biggest jerks in the game, and the world knows it. Stay classy, Joe.
