Joey Porter doesn't understand why the Dolphins aren't favored in the AFC East
Joey Porter once again shows why sometimes it's better to be silent and let people think you are stupid, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
17
Joey Porter seems to think that winning the AFC East should guarantee that the Dolphins are everyone's pick to win the division again.

Forget that the Bills picked up an elite WR in Terrell Owens. Forget that the Patriots are getting their MVP QB back, Porter says:

"I don't understand how you can put somebody in front of us. We won the championship. We were AFC East champions. I just don't think it's supposed to happen like that. You've got to beat somebody to be the champs. We had to beat somebody to be the champs."

I could sit here and pick apart this ridiculously stupid statement for days. But the thing that Joey really needs to realize is that these predictions don't matter. Everyone picked the Dolphins to be the worst in the AFC East last year. Did that mean that they were REALLY the worst? Obviously not.

No one is saying that the Patriots ARE the division champs. They are just saying that they THINK that they WILL be.

As soon as I saw this headline, before clicking on it I said to myself "what did the idiot say this time?"  Joey Porter never ceases to amaze me with the stupid things that come out of his mouth.

I remember him saying something smart once. Seriously. But after all the other stupidity that has come out of his mouth, I forget what it was.

Are you serious?  Isn't that like a sign of the apocalypse?  I don't think it's possible to say Joey Porter and smart in the same sentence.

Totally serious. But for the life of me, I can't remember what it was. I just remember thinking... wow, Joey Porter said that?

i don't care what he says. everybody is gonna have a voice. it just when ur in the media eye what u say gets magnified. what did he say before that statement? what did he say after that statement? the media won't tell u. they just wanna point out the 'dumb' things ppl say.obviously he's somewhat smart. after all he plays pro football. if he was a total dumb a** then he would still be in the ghetto. he's doin something right.

i dont see how its a stupid statement. nothing in his statement is false. patriots got their mvp qb back? hahahaha ok lets see when the season starts. even tom brady himself doesnt know if he'll be the same (see his first interview of the summer)

the bills are atrocious and dont have a decent defense let TO go there cause there is no one to throw to him and no one to block that qb. its not stupid because he was asked how he felt about the pats being on top.

do i think the phins will win the afc east this coming year? i honestly have no idea... they won 2 games more than i thought and i really didnt see them improve dramatically in the WR position which was a key position for improvement. all four of the teams had easy schedules and now they are going to be hell. so lets see.

It's a stupid statement because he basically said that since the Dolphins won the AFC East last season, everyone should pick them to win it again next season.

How is that NOT a stupid statement?

but under the same logic saying the pats are the team to beat is just as stupid. the gators won the nc last year and they are picked to win it again. there are new coaches, players returning, coaches leaving yet people still pick them. according to that logic... its stupid to decree the gators as the favorites to win not just the nc but the sec east.

whats the problem with saying people should pick the dolphins? if tom brady says the road to the afc east champs is through foxboro is that just as stupid as this?

Basically, it is stupid to base your predictions solely on last year's performance. Last year plays a part in predictions for next year, but you have to look at other factors as well.

Last year, the Patriots finished tied with the Dolphins... and I think that most people would agree that the Patriots have made more improvements than the Dolphins have, can we not? If you disagree, I would love to hear the logic, but I think it's pretty safe to say that.

So if they finished tied last year, and the Patriots improved more (on paper, at least), what's wrong with predicting the Patriots to win the division? Should the Dolphins be given a pass, even though they haven't improved as much, just because they won a tiebreaker last year?

On a somewhat unrelated note, I think the phrase "the team to beat" is misused all the time. The "team to beat" is the team on the other side of the field from you on Sunday. Are the Steelers the team to beat? Sure, in a sense. But if you beat the Steelers in the regular season, it doesn't matter. It's the postseason that really counts.

I see what youre saying but the dolphins are now one year into sparanos scheme and they have molded the team a little more accurately then last year to fit that scheme. As you and i both know it does not matter what a team looks like on paper but because the dolphins performed liked so in season 1 of the big tuna and sparanos scheme i think joey does have a point.

heres the thing... you are predicting the pats to win it... how is that now stupid in comparison? dolphins still won last season. dolphins still got to the playoffs and the dolphins still have all their key players and then some.

but if you want to look at it for specifics then the pats did lose some key people. heath evans, harrison and his veteran leadership, the OC, key backup QB in case brady isnt ready because that was a huge injury. (as much as i hate him i still hope the best for him in recovery), vrabel and ellis hobbs. but the pats might have replaced hobbs with springs but he has been on a decline so lets see how that pans out. but there are too many uncertainties to deem the patriots the top team as of now.

as for the dolphins the only key departure was vonnie holliday but added jake grove, gibril wilson (who is pretty good) and eric green from the super bowl contending cards. you say the postseason counts but the pats didnt make it last year and thats a fact... thats why he has a point. prove that the patriots are ok. not just talk it.

and i agree with your last paragraph on that phrase... i hate it too... every team is the team to beat. but we'll see this season... i cant make a prediction because there are way too many things that need to go in line for all four teams. and who knows which teams stars will fall into place this season... its a toss up... cept for the bills and jets ahaha

No, none of that means joey has a point because he is notmakig the same argument that you are. He is arguing that you should pick the dolphins because they won last year, not because they are or are not the better team.

pat asked me if i think the phins have improved more on paper and so i told him what was on paper... i never said thats what joey said. for that specific thing ive clarified why he has a point and i do not feel like numbering it for you.

Heath Evans was very replaceable.
Rodney Harrison was a liability in the field, if and when he was even healthy.
I think we can all agree that the "key backup QB" is a little overrated, since Matt Cassel did pretty well, despite not starting a single game since high school. Kevin O'Connell is fine.
Springs > Hobbs... Ellis Hobbs sucked.

"you say the postseason counts but the pats didnt make it last year and thats a fact... thats why he has a point. prove that the patriots are ok. not just talk it."

So people should only be allowed to choose from last year's playoff teams when making predictions for next year? Apparently you are in the same boat as Porter... or rather, you are drowning with Porter, because you both clearly missed the boat.

There's only one way for the Patriots to "prove it", and that's by beating the Dolphins (and everyone else) on the field when the season starts. Until then, it's all talk. And THAT is exactly what predictions are... TALK. So everyone is entitled to their opinion. Is it wrong to predict that the Patriots will win the division? Of course not. Is it wrong to predict that the Dolphins, Bills or Jets will win the division? Of course not. I could honestly make a solid case for all 4 teams right now.

Bottom line:
Predictions don't matter. They are put out there for people to discuss and talk about. The simple fact that people are predicting the Patriots to win means nothing. It doesn't suddenly take away the fact that the Dolphins missed the playoffs last year. Nor is it disrespectful to the Dolphins or any other team. It's just a prediction.
