Kellen Winslow objects to being called Sgt Winslow
Even though he's a soldier, Kellen Winslow isn't a fan of being called "Sgt Winslow"
34
One Tampa Bay blogger had been calling him "Sgt Winslow" ever since he was traded to the Bucs, but Kellen Winslow apparently doesn't like that nickname. That's funny, because I could have sworn he said he's a soldier... and for a guy with only 4 years experience, Sgt isn't a bad rank at all.

And the people who make fun of him for his ridiculous "Soldier" tirade can make fun of him all they want, as well.

Personally, I think it's hilarious, because the entire rant was so forced and fake, and he was trying so hard to look emotional, while it was obvious that it was all fabricated. And then to compare football with a war, saying the other team is trying to kill him, and that he's a soldier? Give me a break... he deserves to be ridiculed for idiocy like that.

If Kellen was as much of a pro as his dad, he wouldn't have to intimidate bloggers.  His work on the field would stand for itself.

I think he should have to clean the head in the locker room. That would be a gentle reminder.

What gets me more than anything is when the whole "soldier" thing happened, why didn't his dad just tell his boy to STFU?  I realize that defending your son against the media is one thing, but when your son is an arrogant prick, that is another.  Trust me if my son acted like this, wait, my son will never act like this, because I wouldn't let his head swell that big.

All of the soldier talk would have gone away if he would have just kept his mouth shut after he got in the league, kept his head low and let his play do the talking.

First of all if you could predict how your son would act you would be a millionaire....with a title like child behavior specialist and you are not. So that shoots that theory down.

Further you have never met the man so all you know is what you have read or seen on television. So who are you or anyone else to judge?  I mean really if he followed your lead he would be writing about people playing sports not making millions to play. So much for following your lead.

To me it is stupid how people get so upset at his soldier reference. First of all most young men do not fight in a war, nor do they have any clue what it is like to go to boot camp and endure hardship over an extended time.
There is a song called, "I am a Soldier', and it has nothing to do with war, it became a top ten tune.It has more to do with being a man who can maintain an erection......no protest on that one. That means millions bought it danced to it and no one complained. So why is everyone on this man for the soldier statement.

In my neighborhood, SOLDIER, just means a stand up guy, someone you can depend on in a time of crisis or need..........whether in a football game or or a life threatening emergency.

COMPLETELY agree. I just got an email from a buddy who is in Iraq and this was his email this morning:

"we are taking some occasional rocket fire from some crazies out in town. The military put us in an unarmored trailers and refuse to budge on putting armor on them."

when I read stuff like this I get pissed when other people call themselves soldiers. I am not in the military so I can't relate but I do know enough to know that Winslow does need to shut the hell up.

I totally agree. He should be able to say anything he wants. Just remember that whatever you say has consequences. Nicknames like 'Sgt Winslow', Advertisers not wanting you to represent their products, etc.

Hey Kellen, listen to me. Shut up and play football. Your soldier tirade is enough to blow me off. I'm glad you're not on the Browns anymore; idiot!

I agree it is EVERYONES right to express an opinion!, my issue was with telling him to shut up. If he has to shut up then so do all the others. My point was/is that it is okay for him to talk.

Again you think it is idiocy and it may be or not, that was not my point. My point was that  no one can deny anyone the right to express themselves.

I must draw your attention to your paragraph beginning with Personally. At that point, you have told us you have made a judgment .....just because you have made a judgment does not make you right. Give me a break, have you ever been to war. Do you have the foggiest idea what it is to enlist and be a soldier? Hell no you do not. So get off the high horse stuff here.

If you were that patriotic you would be in Iraq or Afghanistan......and hey you are not too old and it is not too late. Keep hearing about people with friends and family in the war, why did you let your friends and family go to do the dirty work and you stay at home?

I am a Viet Nam Era Vet and his statements obviously did not disturb me at all. So why is it such a concern to all the non volunteer, stay at home and complain patriots? That seems like the real idiocy.

But that is all on him. In America we can do this and are not supposed to have to deal with censorship or retribution...............does not happen that way on fan iq. Constant complaints and dogging athletes. How about what goes on on the field and less personal life info?

Besides not everyone wants to be a spokes person.......damn with the money they make playing sports who needs sponsors anyway? Really?

It is his life, his money, his mouth, his words. He may not see the consequences as a big deal. That is all I was saying. Why does he have to live or say what is popular? Everything that is good or bad does not always equate to popular?

December 28, 2008 was my EAS, after 5 years in the Marine Corps. I did not serve in Iraq or Afghanistan, since my MOS was 2673 (Korean Linguist), and they didn't need a lot of those over there, but if you are going to so poignantly and specifically call someone out, be sure that you know what you're talking about, first.

Yes, I know what it's like to enlist. No, I don't know what it's like to go to war, but I know many people who have, and I trained and was prepared to go to war at any time, if I were asked to do so.

No one is denying Kellen Winslow the right to express himself. The quote was "keep pouring it on ... its the only way he will ever learn to shutup".

No one said "let's FORCE him to shut up". Nor did they say "he does not deserve the right to speak his mind". The consensus is merely that Winslow's statements were ignorant and foolish. Does he HAVE to shut up? No. But in cases like that, would it most likely be a good idea? Yeah, probably.

Watch the video again. Winslow's entire rant just reeks of feigned sincerity and forced emotion. Is that his right? Sure. But he looks like a moron. That's all we're saying.

Gosh, you guys get real emotional about stuff like this..  I know this is completely off course, but the Bucs football camp was a success.. Sgt Winslow was a hit with the kids and they all took pictures and had a great time... ;o)

Oh yea, it was free...

Pat, I completely agree... one of my fraternity brothers served as a special op something in Iraq... i dont know what its like to be in war but the things i hear coming from my brother cannot compare to any kind of football or sport. I have experience in football as a SS so i know what that is like at least and to say that they are out to kill you or being a soldier is something that will not be looked at as an effective analogy to the thinking public.

cinnalocks... realize this... YOU are doing the same thing everyone else is doing on this website. Calling out our interpretation of something like kellen did in his football game. No one is taking away his rights they are just saying you might want to think of a more effective way to express your views on the same situation. The hit was dirty, Legal but dirty. thats why he got called out in the first place.

Oh and for you to compare patriotism with somebody is incredibly offending. Pat can tell you, i dont get that easily offended... maybe defensive but not offended. Are you serious about that? calling a 24 year old out for not enlisting. I didnt enlist am i not a patriot? am i not a good american? Going overseas to vietnam or iraq isnt the only thing that deems you a patriot or a supporter of this country and happenings around the world.

p.s. Let's not forget that a vast majority of Vietnam vets did NOT volunteer. While I respect what they've done and the sacrifices they made, let's not pretend that they were all jumping in line to voluntarily serve their country. That's just not how it happened.

Oh absolutely i agree 100% it doesnt take away from their sacrifices but it does not give them a card to use that deems everyone else unpatriotic if they havent served. I think that is disrespectful, shameful and absolutely inexcusable.

I DO NOT KNOW WHAT KIND OF AMERICAN YOU ARE........BUT I KNOW YOU ARE NOT A SOLDIER.

Patriotism was once synonymous with service. Now most Americans are a self righteous and afraid to They want entitlements.... with no personal sacrifice. Patriots serve. That was/is my point.

Be offended if  you like,( I do not mind)  that is your right, a right that came from those who sacrificed and got in harms way. By the way you sound rather defensive, a characteristic usually associated with guilt and self doubt.

Whether they enlisted or not they did serve three years four years.................... That was not the point................I enlisted..........I did not say you were not patriotic, I did question how you say you or any one else claims to be a patriot and in the time of war as we are in now and have been for years, does not serve the country. I mean we are seeing some men with families go on tours two or three times due to lack of soldiers, reserves doing tours, so where are you all in a time of need like now. Why are others serving for you? THAT WAS MY QUESTION.????

I do not agree with you and that is all I was saying. I then went on to tell you why and that is what you objected to. If you served then you know you are a minority and then too what  I was saying to not personally apply to you if you served. So why are you still talking and why are offended.. get over it. I thought you said you were a Marine.

I'm not offended at all. I am merely pointing out your incredible ignorance, as you directly called me out several times, despite the fact that I indeed volunteered to serve in a time when I knew there was a high chance that I would go overseas.

My point is that you are misunderstanding people's point on this. No one is saying that Kellen doesn't have the freedom to say whatever he wants. That's one of those unalienable rights that we ALL have. We're just saying that when he says stuff like that, it makes him look like an idiot. He is more than welcome to continue to do so, but it only reflects poorly on himself.

but you dont have a problem with kellen winslow...a spoiled prick.. calling himself a soldier?

WTH went on in this blog? Man, give it a rest peeps! I'm retired soldier and combat veteran Desert Storm and OEF Afghanistan. Let's not beef about our patriotism we all differ on our views about subjects on here and let's leave it at that. BUT, I was a little pissed when i saw Winslow make the statement about being a soldier because I was getting ready to make a little trip to a war zone, so my thinking was, "He doesn't even know what it is to be a Soldier..." but know I find it comical, which is why I wrote my comment earlier. Does anyone know when he made this comment? WOW Nov. 2003..... Let the winslow soldier thing go......

If he owned up to it as being a naive mistake then i would forget it the moment I read or listened to the apology but instead he attacked a blogger for calling him sgt winslow (which i hate because when did he ever get promoted to sgt?). Which shows hes not ready to be respected as an intelligent individual. I would have called him Pvt Winslow... but thats just me.
