Ladell Betts fills in for Portis and the Redskins win

The Washington Redskins finally scored more than17 points in a game Sunday, against the flailing Denver Broncos, and defeated them 27-17.  Clinton Portis, the team's leading rusher and, some would say troublemaker, was not playing in the game, due to his recovery from a concussion.

Ladell Betts filled in just fine, rushing for 114 yards in the game, and a touchdown.  It seems Portis wasn't really missed a whole lot.

Coach Zorn was asked whether the team might consider making the position more of a shared one between Portis and Betts, and Zorn, never one for being entirely forthcoming, said that is how the positions has been played all along.  Ummm really? 'cause I sure don't remember seeing a whole lot of Betts before Sunday.  Too bad, too, because he played the position well.

Now don't get me wrong, it isn't that I'm against Portis, but he has shown himself to be a bit of a prima dona at times, and seemed to be the player behing all the dissension in the Redskins' locker room earlier this year.  His gradeschool-esque tiff with Mike Sellers earlier this year had discord among the team members before the season had really begun.  Could his headaches and other symptoms of the concussion have had anything to do with the Redskins' success on Sunday?

Coach Zorn has said Portis won't play this coming weekend, if he isn't able to practice with the team.

That just might be exactly what the team needs.
