With all the talk to Notre Dame wanting to woo Urban Meyer over to South Bend, the most consistent comment I've seen from you wonderful, intelligent folks at FanIQ is that it boils down to money talks. So exactly how much should Florida be paying Urban to keep him happy?
Florida President Bernie Machen thinks that Meyer should be the highest paid coach in the SEC. However, Meyer's currently salary is $3.25 million a year. Oklahoma's (yes, bear with me) Stoops now makes around $4 million a year. We have yet to hear about Nick Saban's new contract negotiations yet. Furthermore, Les Miles has a clause in his contract that he will make $1000 more than any coach in the SEC (yet another reason why I think the man is a genius, but that's just me).
Now I'm never one to favor the Gators in any way, but Meyer does deserve one hell of a raise. With two championships in three years, a two time Heisman QB and many other accolades, that man has brought more revenue to that school than any other program. If you live in Florida, you can see that his salary could be paid from merchandise sales alone with the way Gators gear flies around here. I have a Ford pickup truck in my neighborhood that is wrapped 100% in a Gators decal. Sadly, it's not the only one I've seen either. There is not one single day that I don't see several t-shirts, hats, decals and countless other merchandise. That's not to mention how many people travel to the games and bring revenue into the city and the stadium. Gators football is big, big business in this state.
So if you were Florida, how much would you up the ante to keep him happy? Bernie Machen's idea of him being the highest paid apparently is being trumped by Les Miles, but in my opinion, he needs to be making a considerable amount more than he is. The fact that Stoops, who hasn't been able to seal the deal since 2001, makes more than Meyer is ridiculous. If I were Florida, I'd be throwing numbers around $4.5 to $5 million his way or you may be right, Notre Dame may be able to woo him away.
