Manchester United gets more stoppage time from referees when they are losing
Wait... you're telling me one of the most popular Premier League teams gets preferential treatment from refs? No way...

The whole "extra time" thing in soccer always seemed a bit shady to me. No one knows how much extra time will be granted at the end, and it seems like a ridiculously arbitrary system to a novice like myself.

According to some statistics, Manchester United gets an average of 191 seconds of extra time when they're winning after regulation, and 257 seconds when they're tied or losing. So when they need the extra time to give them a chance to tie or win the game, they get it. Shocked? Of course not.

The majority of soccer matches go into extra time because of goals, sure some penalty time, but mostly goals... A great team like Man U scores many goals... When a clearly superior team gets into trouble with a clearly inferior team, it much more often is a shootout, 3-2, 2-1, sometimes even some 4's... See the most recent Brazil-USA match, a large part of the 2006 world cup, etc... When the lesser team beats the better team, most of the time they are just going all-out on attack and hanging with them... The big guys are not going to get shut out.... Its not like baseball where you can have a crappy team with an ace play an all-star team and win 1-0... Much more frequently in soccer its a shootout. That said, more goals (when the better team is losing and the other team is hanging with them) means more extra time added. ITs not too much of a stretch to think out.... Plus as Wordsmith says a game official is notified. Something like that is way too shady to have not been somewhat regulated...

The extra time is awarded mostly because of goals?  I thought 1-0 was a blowout in soccer.

in soccer the clock 'runs' after a goal is scored. So while dudes are jumping all over each other and running around with shirts off the stadium/tv clock runs... The ref takes note of the time that elapses during those "time-outs" and it gets added on to the end of the half as extra time...

i think that the extra 2 mins in that match was because bellamy spent an approx. 1 min celebrating and carrick's substitution took another 56 secs, according to a press conference after the match.

I bet City wouldn't be having a bitch about it if they had scored and won the game in extra time.

Well, let's take a look at what happened in the 2nd half, before stoppage time was posted. 2 goals, 3 yellow cards, 1 red card, and 5 substitutions. That right there will add a fair bit of time on. Oh, and to the Liverpool fan who was moaning...it might help if your team actually showed up to play a few times a season, and didn't cough up points every other week.
