Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter: Who is more valuable to the Yankees?
Which future Hall of Famer has been more valuable to the Yankees, Mariano Rivera or Derek Jeter?
20
Who do you think has been more important to the Yankees? The shortstop? Or the greatest closer of all time? My vote is for Rivera, by far. Jeter has been overrated and overpaid for years, while Rivera is truly the best in the business.

What is this, a joke? It's Rivera by a mile. Not saying Jeter isn't a great player, just that as a position player, he factors less into the equation.

Rivera by a country mile. Jeter is okay ... but is overrated from the cutoff throw they show on the highlights.

Jeter is great, but Rivera is one of the best pitchers in post season history. 0.77 post season ERA, fuggedaboutit!

You put Rivera on the 90's Braves and they have 8 titles. You put Jeter on the Braves and we don't get to witness the greatness that is Jeff Blauser.

Hahahaha, she wins for making A-Rod look like an idiot. Or an even bigger idiot, I guess.

I'll take Rivera too, but in all fairness to Jeter, he will have 3000 hits to go with all of those rings.

It's impressive, but 3,000 hits is a MUCH bigger club than 500 saves.

Very true, Pat.  Especially since most of those came in meaningful games.  My standing up for Jeter is definitely not meant as a slight toward Rivera.

I'll take Mo because he's happy with his two mansions in Avila, but Jeter has to have his mansion in Avila PLUS the biggest residential structure in Tampa: http://www2.tbo.com/content/2009/mar/19/jeters-big-hit-30000-square-foot-house-davis-islan/

I'm not a Yankees fan, but my favorite Yankees are as follows: 1) Babe Ruth 2) Lou Gehrig 3) Joe Dimaggio 4) Mickey Mantle 5) Derek Jeter

Most people don't realize it, but Derek Jeter's stats are pretty much the same as Robin Yount.  Now, don't get me wrong, Yount was a great player for a long time, but when the words "All-Time Greats" come up, Robin is never in the conversation (even in Milwaukee).  Rivera's longevity and freakish consitancy at a postition that most teams have trouble filling from year to year make him far more valuable.

Where I take issue is in the idea that a closer, regardless of how good or great, can be more important to a team than an everyday player, let alone one who plays a the premium position on the field.  Jeter is more valuable, simply because he has the opportunity to, and has, influenced more outcomes of more games than Rivera ever has or will.  Rivera is certainly better than Jeter at what each of them do respectively, but Jeters's impact on the Yankees championship teams is measurably greater because he has participated in 5 times as many games and situations as Rivera has.  The truth is that yes Rivera was great at getting the last 3, 4, 5, 0r sometimes even 6 outs of a playoff game, but the Yankees had to get there with the lead for him to have that opportunity.  For that reason, I would say Jeter's has been more valuable.

Even though Jeter is on the field longer, Rivera probably made almost as many plays, in the sense that he is responsible for every single batter, when he is in the game.

And I think you're measuring value the wrong way, to be honest. Take Jeter away and replace him with an average shortstop, and the Yankees would actually improve defensively, and would really only see a decrease in batting average. Take away Rivera and replace him with an average reliever, and they would lose a significant amount of games.

Jeter and Rivera are both likely 1st ballot Hall of Famers, though Jeter is not a great defensive player, he does all the 'little things' including help manage the Yankees lockerroom, but hammer of the gods closers are nearly impossible to find, to rephrase which player scared the other team more?  We can likely all agree that Mariano Rivera is the answer to that one.
