Matt Holliday traded to the Cardinals for 3 prospects
UPDATED: Matt Holliday is a Cardinal. The A's will receive 3 prospects in return
23
From ESPN, according to "league sources":
The Athletics and Cardinals are close to completing a trade that would send outfielder Matt Holliday to St. Louis in exchange for third baseman Brett Wallace, outfielder Shane Peterson and right-handed pitcher Clayton Mortensen

Wallace is one of the Cardinals' brightest hitting prospects, but there are some questions about him playing 3B long term, and whispers that he may have to move to 1B. Obviously, the Cardinals are all set there for a decade or so, but Wallace has a very bright future at the plate, regardless.

Peterson was a star in the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2007, which is the premier summer league in the country for college players. He's also an excellent young hitter, and more of a contact hitter than a power hitter.

Mortensen was doing great in AAA this year, but got roughed up a bit in his major league debut earlier this year. He looks to have a bright future regardless, as he's only 24 years old and has pitched well on almost every level.

This looks like a great deal for both sides if it goes through. The A's are getting some high quality prospects for Holliday, who they were planning on trading from the moment they acquired him, and the Cardinals get a much-needed extra bat. Holliday has been hitting well lately, and one can only assume that being in the same lineup as Albert Pujols will help.

UPDATE: Looks like the deal is official, including the above terms, and the Athletics are kicking in $1.5M as well.

This actually might work out for the Cardinals long term as well.  If Matt Holliday leaves as a free agent....and that is probably more of a WHEN since the Cardinals are starting to negotiate a long term extension with Albert Pujols.... the Cardinals will get the first round pick and a compensatory pick from wherever Holliday ends up.  I'm all for the Cardinals trying to improve there team, especially in a division that is up for grabs.  Should they make the playoffs, they proved in 2006 that anything can happen, why not make a couple of moves to take your best shot at another run to a title

Just what Cincy needed: another dominant force in their division not on their team. He could've been a good outfield replacement for Jay Bruce.

Now the question will he sign with the Cards or the road.

Dang, I was hoping he'd be wasted for the rest of the year in Oakland and they wouldn't get anything for him.
Good trade for Oakland, they get two of the Cardinals top 10 prospects (Wallace is a niice pickup) and the player they chose in the 2nd round of last year's draft. That's a lot to give up for two months of Holliday, but it could work out short term for the Cards and long term for the A's.

Had to be done, but sad to see the experiment end so soon.  Holliday did turn it on at the right time, and should be great protection for Pujols as well.  The A's basically got back what they traded for Holliday, only in positions of need too.  Wallace is the hitting prospect the A's need, and could be the future at 3rd base.  Kinda knew this was going to happen, it was only a matter of who and when.  Solid move by Beane to get a lot of value back for a guy who the A's had no real shot at keeping past this season.

The A's are clearly thinking long term.  They are slipping too far back in their division 16 games out.  Beane is notorious for not losing out on deals, he will most likely break even or highly gain from any of his deals. I am just glad Holliday went to the NL and not to the Rangers in the same division were he can hurt you even more.  The Cardinals are getting desperate. The  Cubs, Brewers and the red hot Astros are inching closer to grabbing the division lead away from them.

Pujols is loving this!!  More protection for him in the lineup and this may be the move he has been waiting for the Cards to make to prove to him that they want to be a contender in the future.  Holliday loves NL hitting and he'll love it even more being in a lineup with Pujols.  I've had this tandem in fantasy baseball for the past 4 years, so dreams are coming true!!

Holliday is great guy and a good ball player. I wish him the best as he travels around the markets. I just wish he would've stayed with the Rockies... but brother gotta spread his wings

darn right Puljos loves this deal. i expect Holliday to have a great 8 week run for the Cards. The A's got immediate 3b base help plus the pitcher can help late this year or certianlly by next year and the aa outfielder should be a 2011 arrival

Very solid analysis, Pat. Essentially, this means the A's traded Huston Street and Carlos Gonzalez for these three prospects. In the end a good deal because Street and Gonzalez would not have gotten them these guys (especially Wallace)  by themselves.

Seriously... 15 hits, Holliday had 4. Even newly acquired Julio Lugo go in on the fun with two hits and a meaningless HR in the top of the 8th. Lookin' good for the redbirds, who, if they can win the NL Central, have a very good playoff rotation with Carpenter, Wainwright, Lohse/Pineiro. Lookout NL Central. (Blame me if this post jinxes them and they start to blow).

That's probably going to happen a lot more nowadays. I think Holliday was exactly what they needed.
