Mike Leach fired by Texas Tech
Mike Leach has been fired by Texas Tech
I wouldn't call this a surprise by any means. Mike Leach has been fired by Texas Tech. This is due to the fact that he stuck receiver Adam James (son of Craig James) into an electrical closet because James wasn't going to practice because of a concussion. That seems to be frowned upon.

The school handed a termination letter to Leach's attorney, Ted Liggett, on Wednesday just before the two sides were to appear in a Lubbock, Texas, courtroom for a hearing on the coach's suspension.

Liggett says the letter says Leach is "terminated with cause effective immediately."

Anyhow, it's rather amazing how quickly this went down. Leach built this program from literally nothing, and then they fire him almost instantly. But I actually am firmly behind Texas Tech on this one. What Leach did was inexcusable, and it takes guts to fire a guy who built your entire program from scratch. But Tech stepped up and did exactly that. And they should be commended for doing so.

UPDATE: I should point out that many people have come to Leach's defense, including former QB Graham Harrell, other players, and even coaches, saying that James is basically a grade-A asshole. You can read their letters at CBS Sports. However, I still don't think that means you can stick a kid in an electrical closet for two hours. However, one starts to wonder if James really did have a concussion and if this is one of those situations that wasn't nearly as bad as it was reported. Either way, the James family is now 2-0 in killing programs (Craig James was on the infamous SMU team that got the NCAA's death penalty for James, and many others, taking cash for playing).

Also do not forget Craig also helped kill the Washington Federals.

Well it looks like the University had enough of the dread Pirate Andy Milonakis and fired a broadside into his employment. I love Leach because he is a little wacky, but even if James' kid is Camp Mohawk kind of A-hole you can't  do that, but I think the university was itching to find away to can him, especially after the tet-a-tet we all witnessed during Leach's contract negotiations.

I think the university probably sent him an e-mail that went like this.

Dear Captain Wackjob,

GUNS UP, because you are walking the plank!

Hey it has been fun. Oh we have had some laughs and loved the pirate stuff, no seriously, also we really did enjoy being relevant in football, but we are de-friending you.

Hugs,

Texas Teach University

P.S. Don't even think about stealing office supplies!

Reportedly, the school and Leach weren't getting along all too well anyway.  I hope Tech is able to build upon this because as you said what they did took some courage.  They weren't swayed by all the potential money a good football program brings in.  Good for them.

I agree, but now his lawyer is trying to get him his bonus that was due tomorrow. 2nd Big 12 coach to be fired for mistreating players. I wonder how rampant this is in college football. Its a new era and coaches need to know how to treat players. You dont need to treat them with kid gloves but what he did to James and what Mangino did, is unacceptable. I would never have let my kid play for Leach

What Leach did may be inexcusable, but I dont think it's worthy of a guy being fired over, especially when that guy has built your program from scratch and brought some respectability and name value to your school.  I think it's more likely thatTexas Tech realized that with the new year coming up, they were going to have to pay Leach $800,000 so they used this incident as "just cause" to fire him so they didnt have to pay him.

The doctor said there was nothing wrong with what took place as far as closets and what not. One of the coaches made a statement saying Adam James has had problems in the past with coaches, attitude and work ethic. They feel this is his way of getting back at the coaching staff. I feel if his dad wasn't Craig James, this wouldn't have ever broke news. Who knows what party is to blame, but looks like Leach is the one looking for a new school, not James...

It doesn't sound good what Leach did, but you are forgetting something, this isn't high school. They are not "kids" anymore. All are over 18 and considered legal adults. The only reason this broke big was because of Craig James influence over college football. The school didn't release the athletes name, Craig James did in a statement. Any other parent of an athlete on the team wouldn't have that clout. This is just weird and seems like it is just a blanket story for some other things going on under the surface.

Wow, those are some complex letters for football players, escpecially at Texas Tech. Does anyone know what happened to Graham Harell, anyway?

Wow have things changed from in 1977  when Coach Dooley at VPI punishment drilled to death a reserve fullback, Robert Vorhies an Irvington, N.J. native, aged 18 who seemingly had died in during punishment workouts at Virginia Tech (known as VPI at the time).   Or more recently: Cory Kipp is alleging he suffered second-degree burns while being punished for missing a weigh-in:

Kipp, a defensive lineman under Mark Mangino in 2002 and ’03, told the Journal-World this week that he endured significant injuries to his hand as a result of a punishment carried out by the coach — a claim backed up by multiple former players, as well as photos taken shortly after the incident.  Despite repeated complaints of burning reportedly Kipp was instead told to “bear-crawl” across the AstroTurf field at Memorial Stadium on his hands and feet. On multiple occasions, Kipp said, he stopped to complain that the turf was burning his hands — according to a University of Arkansas report, artificial playing surfaces have been documented at up to 199 degrees in temperature — but was ordered by Mangino, who was walking alongside the crawling player, to keep going.

Is it a good thing the 'Junction Boys' days have passed, yes.  But is it possible the pendulum is swinging too far?  There are increasing reports of players expecting to be promised playing time, or expecting to be given special privileges due to status as recruits or family connections.  I think there’s more here as well.

The article I read said that it wasn't JUST an electrical closet and he wasn't in there for long, as the buzzing was giving him a headache - he was put in the media room then when observed sitting, the chairs were removed.  I can't find the same one I read yesterday, but here's an exerpt from tanhouse.com

"According to sources, Leach ordered Adam James into a darkened room for a two-hour period after not believing his injury was severe. Two days later, Leach ordered the trainers to again place Adam James in the dark room and that time had all the contents removed so James would not have anywhere to sit."

I think this has more to do with the fact that Leach was filing an injunction against Tech to get around his suspension. Think in Leach was successful in doing that what kind of precedent it would set. There would be no way to punish a coach. So rather than taking a chance on losing in court Tech pulled the trigger and fired him.

Maybe Cleveland will get lucky and the Browns will grab him.  Some of their players need a time out.

Oh this is gonna be messy.  The firing is round one.  Expect some protracted legal maneuverings before this story goes away...
