The school handed a termination letter to Leach's attorney, Ted Liggett, on Wednesday just before the two sides were to appear in a Lubbock, Texas, courtroom for a hearing on the coach's suspension.
Liggett says the letter says Leach is "terminated with cause effective immediately."
Anyhow, it's rather amazing how quickly this went down. Leach built this program from literally nothing, and then they fire him almost instantly. But I actually am firmly behind Texas Tech on this one. What Leach did was inexcusable, and it takes guts to fire a guy who built your entire program from scratch. But Tech stepped up and did exactly that. And they should be commended for doing so.
UPDATE: I should point out that many people have come to Leach's defense, including former QB Graham Harrell, other players, and even coaches, saying that James is basically a grade-A asshole. You can read their letters at CBS Sports. However, I still don't think that means you can stick a kid in an electrical closet for two hours. However, one starts to wonder if James really did have a concussion and if this is one of those situations that wasn't nearly as bad as it was reported. Either way, the James family is now 2-0 in killing programs (Craig James was on the infamous SMU team that got the NCAA's death penalty for James, and many others, taking cash for playing).
