The NBA salary cap will be $57.7M for 2009-10, down from $58.68M last year.

The luxury tax level is also lower, down to $69.92M from $71.15M last year.

This is not good news for fringe-level free agents, since teams will be looking to keep salary as low as possible.

Does anyone have Bud Selig's e-mail address? I think he needs to see this...

This is a huge story. The cap won't go up huge in 2010, and the report today said that this cap of 57.7 million is actually a pretty optimistic outlook and the reality is that the cap will be even less than that because of the economy bottoming out.

So what does this mean? To me, it means that the Knicks are only going to have enough cap room in 2010 to sign one max contract. And if they can only sign one deal, I'm thinking it won't be LeBron. Unless the Knicks can bring in more players, perhaps D-Wade for example, there is no way that LeBron will leave Cleveland to become the *one* player in New York.

I think now that this news is out you are going to see LeBron sign an extension with Cleveland in the near future.
