NFL Felons to Pick Up the Tab for Injured Players?
READ MORE:
NFL
I don't know who the author to this is, but Mike Nadel has a genius idea.  Let's make the NFL miscreants who get suspended pick up the tab for the NFL retirees who have costly medical expenses.  What a novel idea.

While football players play in the NFL they are the kings of professional sports, millions of dollars, fancy houses and really nice cars, but when they leave the NFL they become something much worse.  They become the used, washed up, disfigured, permanently damaged has beens.  The NFL does little to help the retirees who made the game what it is today, when they could do much much more.

This isn't like asking for a welfare check for a guy you don't know down the street, this is asking the NFL to not forget about those who paid their dues to make the NFL the sporting power house it is today.  Nadel is absolutely correct when he states suspended players money should not go back into the Owners pocket.  It isn't like he needs the money, and teams should learn a lesson with the troubled players they pick up, and not reap the rewards given for having suspended players on their team.  This wouldn't be great for a long term solution, but it beats the hell out of what they have done so far.

So in other words, you think the owners of trouble making players should pay the fees?  How exactly does that teach the trouble makers anything?  They aren't getting any money either way!

It's not actually the owners, it's the players who gets suspended's money.

The player gets suspended, and his pay during the suspension is normally given back to the owner.
Under this proposal, that pay would instead go towards the injured retirees.
The owner isn't LOSING money, he's just not MAKING money off his player causing trouble.

If you have a player who can't play then why should you have to pay anything?  You have to pay somebody else to take his place on the team.  If I get suspended from my job or thrown in jail for something my boss isn't going to pay me for my time off and he surely isn't going to donate my salary to some disabled person.

But maybe this would give the owner more incentive to:
  • Do more extensive research on the character of the players they sign
  • Make the contracts void if the player gets convicted of a crime (which would give the player more incentive to stay out of trouble)
  • Make sure players are better disciplined in general
Overall, something like this would be good for everyone, IMO.
