NHL Finals - Lowest Rated Program in the History of Prime Time
READ MORE:
The NHL has fallen quite a far way as we know, but this years' finals have set a record.  And not a good one.  Game 3 was the lowest rated program in the history of NBC during primetime TV.  It received a rating of 1.1 and a share of two.*  This was down 31% from last years' matchup between Carolina and Edmonton.  Game 4 was slightly worse, but still couldn't reach a two.

Now just to show how bad that is, that is the same rating received by poker on NBC, that aired at noon on a Sunday.  When you are watched less then people playing cards at noon on a Sunday, you have a serious problem.

The shame is, for those who have watched the playoffs, it has been very exciting.  But you wouldn't know, because the NHL can't market it's product to save it's life.

Many of your may remember my post highlighting why the Ottawa/Anaheim matchup was the worst case scenario.

Obviously, that matchup is hard to sell to fickle, ESPN controlled casual fans.  But have you seen any advertising for it?  Because I sure haven't.

If you watch 30 minutes of any program on ESPN, you will see multiple commercials for the NBA Finals.  They make sure to drill into your head that it's happening.  I have not seen one commercial for the Stanley Cup finals that wasn't during the game.  Most people don't know what's going on.

GiguerePlus they aren't marketing any players.  If you've watched the NBA commercials, you are hearing all about LeBron, and Tim Duncan.  Why isn't the NHL trying to market any players?  You have Giguere, who has been a beast in net.  What about Jason Spezza, who is only 24 years old and become one of the NHL's premiere guys.  What about Neidermayer, Alfredsson, Heatley, Selanne?  The NHL doesn't market it's game at all, so why should anyone care?

This is a sad reality for the NHL.  What was once one of the "Big 4" professional sports leagues in America, may not even be worthy of being number 4 anymore.  Hell, NASCAR may have surpassed it in terms of popularity, drawing much superior TV ratings as well as very good attendance records.

As much as I enjoy watching the NHL, under current management, the league will remain a sinking ship, and unless changes are made at the top of the NHL totem pole, the league will continue to fall until it becomes less relevant than the WNBA.

The NHL has a lot of problems, and they keep trying to fix them by tinkering with the rules of the games.   Unfortunately, what they fail to see, is the quality of play is not one of them.  With ratings this bad, what motivation does NBC to keep something on their network that isn't working?  They signed a one year extenion this past March, and have an option for another year after that.  If they continue to draw this low, NBC would be stupid to keep it on their network, as they'd be essentially wasting money.

Until they fix the real problem of idiots running the marketing and TV deals, the NHL will cease to matter in comparison to the other major sports.

Another exciting season is soon to be in the books, it's a shame so few realize it...

* The rating is the percentage watching a telecast among all homes with televisions, and the share is the percentage tuned in to a broadcast among those households with televisions on at the time. A ratings point represents 1,114,000 households.

The NHL needs to do whatever it can to get on ESPN.  Even if it means paying ESPN just to get a weekly game on its network.  That alone would help viewership.

I'm cheering the Ducks on and was watching on Sat. and Mon. (although I did miss some parts). However, one advantage of not being too mainstream may be a preservation of the purity of the sport (in contrast, maybe, to the nba right now).

I've never seen an ad for NHL hockey on NBC.  Ever.

Who cares about ratings?  The TV revenues are miniscule next to the revenues from ticket prices and merchandise.  The NHL should be doing what it can to make its actual fans happy, not the stereotypical US sports fan.  Hockey fans are the most loyal in North American sports, but we're getting sick and tired of substandard commentators and channels!  Wake up before Croquet passes by hockey just like every other sport.

Someone elsewher brought this up so I can't take credit for this idea but...

The fact that people generally watch sports in public places like bars, restaurants, etc. kind of skews the numbers just a bit.  I mean if it got basically close to the same ratings as a bad rerun, I can say with confidence that a lot more people actually saw the hockey game because of the public viewership that isn't taken into account in the Nielsen ratings.

You cannot say "who cares about ratings?" and "...but we're getting sick of substandard commentators and channels". The latter is a result of the former. And besides, I am sure the NHL cares about the ratings. TV ratings result in fannies in the seats. TV ratings equate into $$$ for the league. If you can't get your product to be watched, you can't get it onto a real network, and your league dies.

I'm sorry, but I think you are kidding yourself if you believe people were packing the sports bars across the US to watch the Stanley Cup finals. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that in bars across the country there was a meaningless early season baseball game on instead of the hockey game. And that's a shame because hockey is a great sport and the playoffs are outstanding.

Maybe where you live, but the hockey fanbase in the Northeast is pretty strong.  I mean if you think that even one person was watching the hockey game in a quarter of the bars in the NY area, that'd still skew the numbers.  Then, you extrapolate that across all good hockey markets and you're saying that it isn't a large number of people?

Most of the strong hockey markets have no need for national coverage.  They sell out every single game.  Look at Philadelphia, they were horrible last season and they still packed people in admirably.  National hockey coverage does nothing but tries to let out of market people see hockey to grow the sport.  Right now people aren't interested so why should they even care?  The sport has a large fanbase and just because the Nielsens don't count Canadian viewers doesn't mean no one cares.

I have a question - it's been made extremely clear that NBC didn't pull in ratings for the NHL in the very few games that it had. I think they did a game on Saturdays during the season but I'll admit that I never watched the NBC game because they rarely aired my team and I have the Center Ice package through DirecTV. Does anyone know what the ratings are for FSN, CBC, and other networks that air hockey more often rather than just the NBC ratings?
