Nate Irving Injured in Car Crash
by Sean Ahern

NC State linebacker Nate Irving was injured in a car crash on Saturday, June 28, and he was brought to Wake Med Trauma Center in Raleigh, NC with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

The junior linebacker suffered a collapsed lung and a broken leg and was scheduled for surgery on June 29.

The one-vehicle crash happened around 4:40 am near the 314-mile marker in western Johnston County on Interstate 40, according to the Highway Patrol report. Irving was cited for reckless and careless driving, caused by being tired or sleepy behind the wheel, according to the report.

“Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with Nate and his family,” said head coach Tom O’Brien to the media after the crash. “All of his teammates and coaches will be there to support him as he recovers and goes through the process of rehabilitation.”

Currently, Irving is recovering from his injuries and is in good health. N.C. State Sports Information Director Annabelle Myers has stated that Irving's status for the 2009 season has not been determined yet, while linebacker coach Andy McCollum has stated he does not want to even think about that yet.

Irving was an honorable mention All-ACC in 2008 while missing almost a third of the season with injuries. He was tied for third on the team with 84 stops and had four interceptions.

Irving considered leaving N.C. State for the NFL after the 2008 season, but he stayed with the Wolfpack and is expected to be one of the top players in the ACC this year.
